Yes, but you can strive to be this guy!

I could certainly see you starting with a hard division of casting for the handguns and saving the deeper dive into weird rifle science later. The straightwall cases really are pretty forgiving, and given the amount of stuff that you kill, you could do A LOT of good science with meplat size, shallow and deep hollow point cavity pins, etc...

There’s ZERO chance, ZERO CHANCE, of him ever casting.

It’s not above your pay grade. It’s above your GAS level.

Just a thought, but for rifle bullets you can avoid all the lube/contamination/seating issues by going to powder coating. You can gas check them if so desired. There's outfits doing it commercially if you want to check them out....

As far as casting goes, I've found "I'm messing with something dangerous, I need peace and quiet, leave me alone so you don't get burned" is a great deterrent to familial members to get some time alone.

Thanks! SIL did some powder coating when he had the outfit up and running, he said it was super easy and the results were really good. I definitely want to play with this but I’m also a little afraid that when we do the old standards like 500gr .458s the purists might be resistant to the new processes. Part of the inventory includes two ovens that he used for powder coating.

Powder coat them silver. That way it’s not “some quar-ass pinko commie color!”

FYI, any color you see that Ceracoat makes in….Ceracoat…
You can also get in powdercoat. Same company, different division.
You want Coyote or Desert Tan? Boom.

I use a clear powder coat. You have to look twice to notice it. I'm using it to coat 535 gn postal shot thru a Sharps. I don't see any difference in accuracy over tradition lube.

This is my collection of .458/.459 lead bullet options. Powder coated bullets seem to leave less fouling in the barrel, except the ACME 576gr likes to leave a ring of lead in my chamber (.458x1.8 and .458 WM). After about three rounds I have to go in with a brush to snag the ring. That bullet is the only one that seems to do it so far, but I have not tried either of the Matt's Bullets options yet. With the exception of the ACME 576 I have only shot the lead bullets in my .458x1.8. I do at some point plan to shoot them in the big boy .458 though.

Left to right is:

Matt's Bullets 730gr GC WFN .458"
ACME 576gr PC 458 SOCOM .459"
Matt's Bullets 575gr GC LFN .459"
ACME 500gr PC 45-70 RNFP .458"
ACME 450gr PC 45-70 RNFP .458"
MBC 410gr PC RNFP #1 SOCOM .459"
MBC 405gr PC RNFP #1 BUFFALO .459"
MBC 300gr. PC RNFP #2BUFFALO .459"

.458x1.8 (1.790" case length) on both ends.

I don’t think I’d ever be really interested in firing up a lead pot to make a few hundred bullets for personal use, but the concept of firing up a commercial machine and feed it ingots on top, flip some switches and then some dials and watch a thousands of bullets come out of the bottom ready to size, coat, package and sell is a different story. That’s basically printing cash in my brain 😱

Think of it as making ice cubes, only you're filling the trays with water that's about 750-800F.

Way less complicated than lobbing .308's at steel a mile away.
