Thinking of getting a pellet gun.

Post by PFD45 »

I want to be ready for the prairie dogs that will be in my backyard this spring.
These are big fat fellas so I'm leaning toward a .22.
Also leaning toward barrel cock but will consider a pump.
Can a CO2 gun take out a prairie dog.
Any suggestions?
The Gammo Whisper line seems popular.
Range will be about 60 yds.

I've had several break barrels and a pump up rifle and they all had horrible triggers. Then I found PCP rifles and have never been happier. My Air Arms rifle will shoot approx 50-60 rounds on a charge. The .177 pellet will exit the back side of a squirrel at 45 yds which is the distance to my back fence. Check out Pyramid Arms. They are a good place to spend some money'. The Benjamin line have a very good reputation.

I'd recommend a Beeman R9 break barrel. They are spring piston and do very well and and are accurate. They'll definitely play hell on prairie dogs. There are also gas spring piston break barrels which are quieter, smoother and more temperature stable because they utilize a piston that's compressed by nitrogen gas instead of an actual steel spring. They also don't abuse scopes as badly because they have a singular piston impulse. Difference is that they are a bit more money but not much. Gamo has been hit or miss over the past few years. Definitely go by reviews. Oh yeah, 22 caliber.

If I was in your shoes and didn't want to spend 500 or so, I'd grab this.

I have this.

The bluing was better than any centerfire being rifle made.
That was 2017 when I purchased it, so it may have changed.
Decent trigger. Air gun fans call it “match grade”.
They have never shot a real trigger. But it’s acceptable.

But anyway, it’s a quality piece. Not much more than the Chinese plastic fantastics.

I had a cheap one, Diana I think it was. I was hoping for a silent stalker, but it was noisy. I shot one squirrel with it, right behind the ear at a distance of 20 feet or so. Put him down without another movement. It was a .177. I don't think it's a hunting gun but I might be wrong.

About 20 years ago, Shotgun News had an article on break-open pellet guns. Some of the expensive ones weren't as accurate as the cheap Chinese ones. I think that article appeared when I had the gun. Those were the days.

There's a gas station about a mile in the background.

Where does this nitro gas come from and how is it quieter?

It's a pre charged cylinder in the gun already. It's quiet by getting rid of the noise that a steel spring with piston would have.

If considering an air rifle try going to Youtube and checking out 'AAR On Air' in the search box. There you will find lots of reviews which are given in a clear no nonsense way. If a springer then check out the BSA Meteor. The latest model is very nice indeed. The AAR reviews come out each Friday and worth a look.
