The .450 was designed for the midwestern states that restrict cartridge length. It really has no redeeming value other than can be chambering in an AR length platform. I don’t see the sense in chambering the ranch in 7.62x39 eitherbullsi1911 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 1:20 amGround squirrels?Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 1:06 am For some reason the Ranch model n .450 is appealing just because I have nothing like that gun, but for the life of me I can’t figure out what I’d hunt with it anywhere near here.

It’s one of my favorite deer cartridges. It’s a 30-30 in a very short action using pointed bullets….and don’t believe the hype that the round is inherently inaccurate. I have 2 rifles (bolt and AR-ish) that do MOA with my handloadsericb622 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 1:47 amThe .450 was designed for the midwestern states that restrict cartridge length. As for the 450- I thought it was designed to put a 45 cal thumper in an AR platform. It does that quite well

7.62x39 has it's place. If the 7.62x39 is a pointless chambering then we might as well also forget about the 6.5 Grendel and 6 ARC.
.450 BM was designed to fit the AR-15 sized platform/magazine. It works well as a commercial cartridge for deer hunting in limited firearm zones, as well as other uses for non deer game. It has it's place. It's just not for me.

The .223 is the most practical offering. Why I love my Gen 1.

My feelings regarding the 7.62x39. It does s job and does it well, I just have a few that do the same better.mitdr774 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 2:13 am 7.62x39 has it's place. If the 7.62x39 is a pointless chambering then we might as well also forget about the 6.5 Grendel and 6 ARC.

Similarly, if I wasn't already somewhat invested in 7mm Rem Mag I would definitely consider the 7mm PRC. I have a feeling that round is going to take hold in the industry since it's got some direct advantages over the 7mm RM (No belt, designed from the get go for heavier bullets, 1:8 factory rifles are standard). We'll see though. Dollar for dollar, if I were starting again now I might very well just go .30-06 and be done with it. Other rounds are interesting, but the .30-06 is efficient, economic, and I can buy it in pretty much any gun or outdoors store in the US.

Already did…. Now trying to navigate the web of regulations in these damn western states . I have to just get some land of my own, a whole other ball of tangled twine.

The same could be applied to many cartridges. My 6.5 Grendel, 6.5x55 Swede, and 6.5 CM can all do the same job. The Grendel and Swede drive a. 129gr at about the same velocity (to be fair I'm using Quick load for the Grendel and book data for the Swede) and the CM can get another 200-400 fps depending on powder. If I use Nosler data for the 142gr I can run the Swede at 2700 fps, which is where some of the powders in the CM topped out with the 129gr. Does that mean I should dump two of them since the third does it better? I won't be and actually plan on adding a 6.5-06 to the mix shortly.
Manufactures will offer up what they feel will sell quickly first. Down the road they will maybe expand offerings if there is enough demand and the sales will make up for the extra costs. When's the last time you noticed a new rifle offered in 6.5x55 or .260? There is more money to be made with 6.5CM. loaded to the same pressures you will find no real advantage to the CM over the .260, and I would speculate that a Swede loaded to CM pressure would outpace the CM by a bit. The issue with hot roding the Swede is similar to what I will run into with a 6.5-06 in that you can only shove so much down a small bore so fast. You have diminishing returns.
Wait, what was the original topic??? We have derailed again.....

I guess anything he could hunt with the 45-60 he could also hunt with the .450 BM, right? Sure it's giving up weight and about 0.006" in diameter, but it should still be about as effective.Elk Creek wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 3:14 pmBecause you can!!!Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Mon Jan 22, 2024 1:06 am For some reason the Ranch model n .450 is appealing just because I have nothing like that gun, but for the life of me I can’t figure out what I’d hunt with it anywhere near here.
My little .458 roughly duplicates .450 Marlin and .45-70 levergun loads. It's not really any more effective on game than a .450BM. I just didn't want a .450 BM.

Re: Ruger American gen2
I bought my 450BM upper on a lark- from probably the cheapest vendor out there. I have been NOTHING but impressed with the round. Having that kinda “thump” out of an AR-15 platform is just all sorts of fun. Plus having MOA performance is just icing on the cakemitdr774 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2024 3:19 pmI guess anything he could hunt with the 45-60 he could also hunt with the .450 BM, right? I went with a Model 70 for my build. Started life as a .270 wsm, but I never shot it before the barrel came off. My goal was .450BM 250gr velocity, but with a 325gr projectile. Unsettled on 2150 fps with the 325 FTX before I abandoned that bullet. I now run a Speer 350gr at 2100 fps with some room to go to possibly 2250 with a different powder.
Nothing against the .450 or AR platform, it's just not what I wanted. I dont doubt the abilities of either the cartridge or platform.
I take it back, I do have one huge complaint about the majority of .450 rifles out there. The muzzle brakes need to go away. Too many people at the range shooting fairly short barreled .450 rifles (braked rifles in general actually) that create excessive blast and noise directed at those trying to shoot on other lanes. It's just not necessary.

A gun range is an ear protection kinda place. Even doubling up on protection.
I personally think the complaint about muzzle brakes is akin to the Karen mentality. Suck it up, Buttercup.

Given that the range has a low canopy over it and the benches are not that far apart, I get over it by packing up and going home. I double the ear protection since I have already lost a lot of my hearing (thanks 6.5x55) but I will not resort to wearing goggles to keep debris from someone else out of my eyes. My belief is that if I need a brake on something to be able to shoot it, I don't need to shoot it.

I put a brake on my .308 and it makes all the difference it claims and then some. Shot a guys .338 and saw impact strikes. With hearing protection I didn't notice a difference in sound

I'm in the minority on this forum, but I like the spiral fluting a lot personally. I doubt the cost saved there would yield a better stock.
