Doing the right thing...

Post by Orchidman »

..and feeling bad about it.
Spent most of the day yesterday working in the butchers shop. Finished at 3.30 went home and grabbed the 243 ( wanted to check the zero with the thermal...thats a whole nother story) then headed up to the horse farm to do stock/water checks etc.
Get to the farm around 5 and decided to check the 243 then do my chores......
While driving up to the back of the farm I saw these girls which had escaped from a nearby deer farm...( the deer farm owner has given up on trying to recover them and said to shoot them)

Gave them a pass as I was pressed for time.
As I crested the ridge leading to the area where we have a range set up I spotted movement about 500m away and intially thought it was more deer....got a bit closer and realised it was 2 dogs running through one of the horse paddocks. Upon seeing me, the dogs started heading for the hills. The owner of the horse farm doesnt tolerate dogs...wild or domestic especially when there are foals and I immediately reached for the 243 which had the Leica scope mounted( I knew the Leica was holding zero) with the intention of dealing to them. They stopped by the fence on the left in this pic, so I snapped a quick pic with my mob while I waited to see where they were going..

They then slunk back down the hill heading for the scrub so I drove a bit closer and exited the truck and got in position. After picking the lead dog up in the scope on 15power I noticed it had a plain leather collar. Also noticed that both dogs were in good condition and didnt look at all wild...
Taking a chance I whistled at them......nek minute they came running towards me.....Hmmm are they attacking? Didnt seem to be Taking a second chance I unshouldered the rifle and whistled again....they increased speed and although I was confident they weren't aggressive I moved away from the truck to give me room and watched....
Both of them ran straight past me jumped into the truck and settled down on the front seats with looks that seemed to say "Oh boy, we get to go for a car ride" !!! :D :D :D
2 beautiful German Shepherds, friendly as hell. The only danger I was in was being licked to death especially when they smelt the southern fried chicken breasts in my cooler on the floor.

Drove to where I had cell coverage and rang the farm owner...told him the stock checks would have to wait while I found the dogs owner...
Spoke to a neighbour up the road (she was gorgeous...no pics  ) and she offered to post up on the locals facebook page. she also had seen them 2 days prior about 2 miles further up the road. So I left her and went to make enquiries.
After speaking to various people who lived in the area I was finally pointed to a particular house and was told to be careful when I visited.......Come again?...but they weren't forthcoming with any more info.
Drove onto the property and found what passed for a house in a stand of pines... the place was very rundown. Banged on what passed for a front door and stood back...
Guy comes to the door and immediately I recognised the outward appearance of a meth head....Asked him if he owned any dogs and he replied yes. He then saw the dogs in my truck and demanded to know what I was doing with them. Managed to calm him down and explained where I found them. He begrudgingly thanked me and I let the dogs out and left.
Unfortunately cell coverage in this area is patchy at best and when I hit an area on the way back My ph went ballistic.
3 missed calls and 2 voicemails. Stopped and listened to the voicemails which were from a distraught woman re the dogs.
Rang her back and found out she was the owners estranged daughter. She has been trying to take the dogs away from her dad as he is not in a fit state to look after them but he keeps threatening her so she wont go onto the property to get them...I would have gladly turned them over to her as she sounded like a person with the dogs welfare at heart.
I might go back and offer to buy the dogs .......and turn them over to the daughter...
Couple more pics..

That's an unfortunate story. Maybe the dogs will escape again and find a better home. I'm glad the dogs didn't get shot though, good looking dogs.
