Charter Undercover .38 Special

Recently came into possession of a dirt cheap, new in the box Charter Arms ‘Undercover’ .38 Special.

I am being asked to run some ammo through it and make sure it functions, hits where it aims, and give my thoughts on it.

So far, I like it. Going to shoot it at the range in about 20 minutes, so I have not actually fired a shot… but initial impressions are good. Surprisingly smooth DA trigger, and a very light SA trigger. It is VERY light weight, listed at 12 ounces on the Charter website. It handles well, has a better sight picture than my 12 year old Bulldog .44Special. And is just very handy.

It is light enough to go in sweatpants pocket and not drag down the pants.

I’ll post the range results in the next hour or two.

Five shots, single action at 5 yards. Not bad

Ran about 50 rounds through it. It shot well. All hits in the A zone off hand both single and double action. I’m impressed with this little gun.

Especially since the local Cabelas was blowing out a selection of Charter revolvers for dirt cheap. This one was $200. My brother bought the .45ACP Pittbull for $299.

For a $200 gun, this gets my endorsement. I kinda like it

Is the barrel timed correctly?

All but one of my CAs were off center.

Both this one and the Pittbull my brother got have the barrel timed correctly. Maybe they fixed the production issue that you made them aware of

If I was keeping this, I would put a smaller grip on it. The rubber grip is great on the range and fills my hand well, but it makes it too big and ‘sticky’ for pocket carry

That was my concern about CA, but for the price it's them or Taurus.

The other week. They had a 38spec Taurus revolver for &150…… still ain’t cheap enough

It would be good if we could get to a place of cheap and acceptable for the need. We've had both steam and IC engines for a LONG time that require parts to rotate, line up correctly, and perform certain functions at certain times. If Honda and Toyota could do that on $3000-$4000 cars that would go 200,000+ miles in the 1970's, we should be able to pull off a $200 revolver.

If nothing else, such a thing would keep S&W and Ruger's pricing honest.

For $200 I would have probably grabbed it too, even though I already have a S&W 442 that I'm pretty fond of for what it is.
