Boring bar it is. Besides, I'm impatient and don't want to wait for the reamer to show up.

Hell, use an endmill as a boring bar.
(That actually works good )

I broke the rear sight on my air rifle a couple months ago. The Grinny's have been getting bold since it has been out of commission. Standing on my retaining blocks and mocking me.
I have a cheap Tasco Rimfire scope I got on sale last year. Mounted it Saturday and sighted it in. Five Grinny's in six shots....

You make a good point. Thankfully I have a good selection of boring bars, thanks to the inheritance of all of my dad's tooling but some of them I've ground myself from hss blanks for odd jobs. The strangest use (or misuse) of a tool was single point threading with a small tap because I was too lazy to grind oneCPJ 2.0 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2024 12:47 amI mean, it’s the sprit of the Fcg 9.Justsomedude wrote: ↑Tue Jun 04, 2024 12:22 am Boring bar it is. Chamber cut. I ended up using a small boring bar after looking up Saami specs and finding the case taper. It turned out great.

What a pain in the ****. Apparently you're supposed to drill the firing pin hole before joint the two metal rods together which most people do with a hand drill. Yeah right. Even so, after having them welded together it wouldn't fit the 4 jaw chuck in the lathe because of the offset and I didn't feel like making a fixture so I got creative.
It worked out really well and left me with a nice drilled and reamed hole.
I ended up getting it finished but will have to test fire it at work tomorrow.

Well it works, and works well too! I get perfect primer strikes because instead of using the 3d printed template guide to hand drill the firing pin channel, I found the dead center to where the pin needs to be by making a hardened center punch that fit the bore and assembled it to punch the bolt. And it absolutely throws the cases out really good for a gun without an extractor. And now it'll go in the safe with the rest of the stuff I own and never shoot.

Neat to see it come together.
Kinda neat to have something functional nearby that only exists because you make stuff.

One good thing about leasing. My wifes lease is up on her Range Rover. So..... you just get another one.

Been wanting to make an ER40 collet chuck for my small 10x30 benchtop lathe for a while. I used to use mostly the 3 jaw chuck for it because it had .0003 runout over 6 inches but the jaws got bell mouthed. I typically keep my 4 jaw in my 14x40 lathe for indicating barrels and larger stuff because it has a 2.25 inch spindle bore. Anyhow, ordered a piece of 1045 from ebay and got started on it yesterday and finished today. It has absolutely zero runout since I machined it on the spindle. I'll use the hell out of this thing.

The new Beverly Hills Cop movie on Netflix is worth the watch, good to see Eddie Murphy having fun.

And the new Guy Ritchie movie on Netflix, The Gentleman, is excellent, quite the cast

Collet chucks can NOT be beat as long as you can turn whatever run out the stock has out before you get to the final diameter. Just like a 3 jaw.Justsomedude wrote: ↑Wed Jul 03, 2024 9:59 pm Been wanting to make an ER40 collet chuck for my small 10x30 benchtop lathe for a while. But the repeatability is sooooo much better than a three jaw. More importantly, you don’t foul up the part finish with the collet.

Exactly. Aaaannd, the part doesn't deflect nearly as much as it does being in a 3 or 4 jaw.CPJ 2.0 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 07, 2024 3:06 pmCollet chucks can NOT be beat as long as you can turn whatever run out the stock has out before you get to the final diameter. What do you do when you get tired of having a "nightstand" and a "carry" pistol because you can't find a holster for your light-equipped pistol?
Make a holster. It's crude, and the supplies are from Hobby Lobby, but it's IWB so nobody should see it and it seems to work.
