Lets talk Luger

Post by Freezer »

My late son inherited a Luger my dad brought back from Germany. It was ignored and is not in good condition. I want to have it restored. Do you know a good company to do this? I was looking at Lugerman.

Restored ?
As in how 🤔
Just thinking keep as original as possible which means do not refinish

As far as Gunsmiths that I like near us, none. However Buffalo Valley Gunsmithing is the guy I am having do my new rifle and he makes 03A4's. I would at least ask him. Lugers are a fickle thing. I saw a gunsmith f up a buddys Luger. When he was done, the blueing was nice, but it wouldnt run.

I am no where near a Luger expert. Hell, I have never even fired or handled one.

But Lugerman has a good reputation. I would start there

Lugerman is tops, by all accounts - but CHECK HIS SCHEDULE first.

There's a guy who goes by "Thor" on the luger forum who appears to also be quite good.

What brand/year/calibre is it?

I'm not completely sure, a long, sad story. It now belongs to my youngest now, I haven't looked at it in years. It is a P08 made in 1939 and the holster is worth more than the gun, I'll have that preserved also. It's chambered in 9 luger.

Just how bad of a condition are we talking about here? Typically any restoration reduces value.

Maybe Turnbull Restorations might have a go at it.

Its almost certainly a Mauser if its a '39, but my recollection of the various makers and their timelines is a bit foggy now.

Lugar collectors are a dedicated bunch of people and they pretty much determine what a Lugar is worth. I would leave it as is, if it's shootable. It may be collectible. Getting it refinished will ruin any collector value. If it's a shooter now, it won't get any better from refinishing. On top of all that is refinishing a Lugar is expensive. So if it's a shooter already, you won't improve it by refinishing.

Does it look like it's been through. . .ummm. . .I don't know. . .maybe the Second World War? ;)

That's cool by itself. Let it be.
WWJMBD?

I believe we should stand on Ceremony. . . while our friends handcuff the sanctimonious little prick and take him away.
