What is your favorite libation?

Post by Freezer »

The tomahawk posts got me thinking.I like good beer and good wine! I prefer pale ale or on a hot day a pilsner. IPAs are too bitter and I think light beers are akin to making love in a canoe, f#####g close to water. I don't like lager beers or tutty fruity ales. I've never had a Mead but would like to try one. With that said I prefer Sierra Nevada, on Wednesday I shoot pool and drink Blue Moon. Kentucky Bourbon Ale is really good but too expensive for my taste. There's no way I'd spend more than $5 for a beer and have no use for a boutique bar. But I pay more for a twelve pack than some folks do for a thirty pack. To each their own.

I like good wine, I'm a wine snob and belonged to 5 wine clubs in California. I still belong to one. I like a good Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is my favorite. I don't like sweet wine. I drink Rodney Strong Chardonnay and 19 Crimes blended red (Up-Rising) as a regular wine.

I don't care for mixed drinks, scotch or rye. Jim Beam black label with two ice cubes is a rare treat and is great in eggnog, my fathers holiday treat.

Right now, coffee!! :) (8 am ish)
Beer: I like Lieines, Point, Yuengling, and lately PBR's have been tasting good!
Fireball on the rocks, a good straight rye whiskey, or a vodka gimlet!! (must prevent scurvy!!)

That being said, I don't drink much anymore but those are my preferences!

Cold, preferably free, beer. Vodka club soda on occasion. Tequila and Fresca (yes, Fresca) every now and then.

Whisky, any good one. Followed by tequila, Don Julio 70 is a favorite but any good one. And a good aged rum to round out the trifecta. Pampero (Venezuelan) is world class though tough to find at times and Don Q (Puerto Rican) is a lifelong favorite.

All drunk neat or with one good ice cube in the summer.

I do enjoy a well crafted Old Fashioned, a Manhattan (or Rob Roy)
Or even a good Irish Coffee on occasion.

Don Q 151 Rum
I preferred Bacardi 151, but they got tired of getting sued by people burnt, when some idiot forgot that 75% ethanol does in fact burn, and quit selling it :(

Beer, whatever. From Miller water (light) to IPA to stout etc. as long as it’s cold.

Whiskey would be Makers Mark.

Wine, would be Jerms Bum Wine, 2017 edition, on ice. Because I’m **** sophisticated.

Cocktails would be a Brown Derby. Which is whiskey, honey syrup, and grapefruit juice. Amazing. Or a Bloody Mary.

To forget the day, it’s a Four Loko or two. Sour Apple on ice.

I did rum and coke for about a year, to excess. 2-3 bottles a week. Which is why I rarely drank. I knew it would become a problem. And it did. So, I don’t buy booze to bring home anymore, just have a couple when I’m out. Last weekend was the first time I drank in months.

I pretty much only have one beer in my fridge, Toppling Goliath PseudoSue. Sometime chiro1989 gives me a few to try
Mostly drink Tito’s and tonic with several limes
Occasional bourbon like Buffalo Trace, Pinhook or Old Forester
Wine is gross, so I don’t drink it

I used to do the beer, anything as long as it's cold thing. That has stopped. I still do it with the brands I recognize/know but damn there is a LOT of REALLY bad tasting beer out there.

Nowadays my son is my taster. He likes trying out new beers so he'll call me and tell me what's out there that he's sure I'll like or if I go to his house I know everything in his fridge is good because he has never failed me.

Oh I forgot, I have become quite fond of Modelo Cheladas. I drank quite a few of those in Mexico before they snuck into the USA, and now Modelo has quite a few good ones on the fridge shelves here in the USA including my favorite, Mango Chile and second favorite Salt and Lime. They now released a Negra con Chile that sounds promising. I really enjoy them as a change of pace from regular beer and they have become my pool beverage of choice.

I don't drink much anymore, but I do like a good one here and there. Beer wise, I run the gambit but I typically go for a pale or hazy IPA. With that said, I've been on a wheat/hefeweizen kick lately.

Liquor wise, I love a good bourbon with one large ice cube, or a few ice cubes. My favorite is Horse Soldier, but there are many good ones out there.

Alone. Yeah, with nobody else.

Malty, not hoppy. Generally darker stuff. Went through Guinness to Fat Tire to Newcastle. Currently on Michelob Amber Bock.

Wine: Will have the occasional glass of whatever the wife is cooking with, which is mostly reds of late. The cheap Trader Joe's stuff ain't bad. She makes one of her mom's awesome chicken recipes that uses Beringer white zin - yes, the pink stuff - in the sauce. Makes for a nice buzz and I'm not gay yet.

I'll occasionally put something whiskey sour-liketogether with bourbon, lime juice and soda water over ice, but that's pretty rare. I'm typically a one (decent) beer lightweight and don't need an elaborate path to my desired fuzzy feeling.

I used to like a good German Pils, Jever being my favorite, but I don't drink any more. Now it's strong, black coffee, Yuban at home, and on special occasions, Jacob Krönung. I don't care for Starsucks...

Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing, Surly Furious or Surly Todd the Axeman are both IPA’s, Surly Darkness is an imperial stout, Central Waters Brewing Satin Solitude imperial stout, War Pigs Foggy Geezer IPA, Summit EPA, Grain Belt Premium or Grainbelt Blueberry, Raspberry Tart or Serendipity From New Glarus brewing, been trying a bunch of Downeast Ciders, Angry Orchard, toss in some Mikes or Smirnoff Ice, and of course inexpensive sweet wine with suggestive modeling on the label. We don’t drink a lot, but we like variety. Usually a Bloody Mary or Fuzzy Navel up at deer camp

Kind of a side note, but non-alcoholic beers have really been stepping their game up the last few years. Probably not for everyone, of course, but if you're the type that feels like a good beer hits the spot but you can't consume alcohol for work or other reasons, they're a great option.

A company called Athletic Brewing, in particular, is phenomenal. We used to order them by the case in the sandbox.

I really liked Scotch whiskey but didn't know my limits. It made me do stupid shìt like threaten people and act a fool. Nothing worse than waking up in the morning and wondering what you posted on Facebook the night before.

Then I reeled it in and drank only beer. Loved me some Milwaukees Best Ice. Managed to not do stupid stuff while drinking it and was the poster child of a high functioning alcoholic.

Then I stopped completely. Had to be hospitalized for DT's and withdrawal but got through it. I don't miss it but it was the worst thing I've ever done (stopping.) Now I have no routine and I'm stuck with permanent insomnia that sleep meds won't even touch. I really respect people that have self control.

I didn’t get crazy and do much dumb stuff(maybe some drunk Amazon shopping) but I did wake up a few mornings not remembering taking a shower and going to bed. Which led to the fear of wondering IF I did something dumb I didn’t remember.

It really is a terrifying feeling. I've often wondered if that's how it feels for people starting to slip into dementia. And I can say that I don't miss any of that, just wish it didn't leave me without a routine. People think a routine is boring until they lose one.
