Compact 45ACP Experience?
Compact 45ACP Experience?
Anyone have any experience with a compact 45?
Meaning a 4in or shorter barrel and not a 1911?
Perhaps a Springfield XD, or similar

Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
I have an AMT Backup in .45 ACP.
All stainless.
Heavy for it's size which is small for a (5 rd) .45.
I consider it a belly gun.
Tested it for functionality and noticed there is nothing satisfying about shooting it unless you're about to be bitten by something.
Teach carried one and sent me instructions on modifying a 1911 mag to work.
Not fun to shoot.
I'm glad I have it.

Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
I have spent some time with my SIL's XDS in 45 ACP. Good shooter. No complaints or concerns come to mind.

S&W M&P Shield - 3.3" barrel - 6+1 and 7+1
No good deed goes unpunished.
Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
Have had most of them cross my path for inspections & test fires.
Generally unpleasant little beasts.

Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
Now I can't really offer a comparison since it's the only compact .45 ACP I've ever fired but I never found the XDs to be particularly unpleasant to shoot. in spite of the small size, the grip frame seems to fill the hand well and offer decent control.
The closest I can compare would be my Colt Defender, It has a 3" barrel but is a 40 S&W which, recoil wise is a very different animal.

I also have an XDs 45 although I don't consider it a compact. It's about the size of a G19, but it's a fantastic gun.

Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
I can’t help here. All my true contact .45s have been Kimber Ultra models. Not what you’re looking for but OUTSTANDING little guns nevertheless.
Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
Dropped by the range today to checkout compacts. The selection was limited to 9mm. The compact frame size just aint for me and my neanderthal paws. No Springfield XD in stock to try.
Ran into a CCW instructor I know and asked a few questions. Advice was if I was familiar with 1911s and stuck on 45 ACP just get a commander 1911 or widen my view and look closely at the much greater availability of 9mm choices. I may go the 1911 commander route.

I like my LW Commander, it gets carried much more often than either of my steel framed ones (45, 10mm)

Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
I got out the XDs45 for the first time in a while. I guess it is indeed a compact(ish) pistol. It's definitely smaller than a G19 but my mind always goes to mouse guns when I think of compact.
Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
The Mrs has a G17 it about right the wider double stack grip makes a difference. The standard size M&P wasn’t bad either but those are not ideal to carry concealed. The compacts all left two fingers dangling with the short grip.

Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
I've got a friend that brings a G30s out to the ranch regularly and I've probably got 100 rounds through it and it's not at all unpleasant to shoot. I'm not a big Glock fan but I like it and I'll probably end up with one. It weighs a good bit less than the P12 that I used to carry.

Re: Compact 45ACP Experience?
As a 45acp 1911 lover....
Dont give up on 9's because you have big paws. I am right there in the knuckle dragger union. You need to look at it as not a shooter, but a concealer. If you can conceal it and hit what you want to then your comfort while firing doesnt matter. I have a Kel Tek PF9 and it literally will lay in my open palm. Weighs a nothing and is a nasty little thing to shoot.
Yep, its a cheap POS. Dont care. Its a POS that I have had for years and never had a malfunction with. Fits in a back pocket of my jeans with a little bit of the slide showing. When Zee made his Mall Shooter test, (12 in target start at 50 yards get 2 hits before you move in 10 yards, timed) I found I could ring a 12 in plate at 50, pretty consistently. Aim point was about 2 foot left, but I can lay them in there and now I know. My time wasnt great, but I got it done. (fyi, that was a fun drill)
There wont be enough "stopping power" difference in a 45 than a 9 in a little pistol.

I was displeased with the velocity loss in both my revolvers chambered in .45 ACP. Unfortunately. Cause it’s a cool idea.
