I'm not aware of any "good" (FP) .510" moulds Not sure a "sleek" pointed .510" at BP speeds would be very good for taking game

Well, after doing some research and because of overpopulation, 45acp blanks are out of stock everywhere unless I put in a special order and wait forever . But I do have a 50 caliber blank at the shop right now. I reckon I could stick to the plan but make it a 50 caliber and use 50 Alaskan brass. It would actually be a .510 diameter bullet but again, pinfires aren't firearms. I think that would be one helluva thumper.

My dad came up with a Civil War Maynard carbine a few years ago. Basically a modern .51-52" caliber brass cartridge with a REALLY wide rim for manual extraction and a flash hole instead of a primer pocket to receive the flame jet from a musket percussion cap - or, in some cases, the patented Maynard tape primers. Pretty simple design that was sturdy enough to make the transition to the postwar black powder target cartridge era. Might be a place to start. I don't think it would be too challenging to make a pinfire version.

Or maybe a side-swinging action with an under=hammer? Hammer probably wants to be on the gun's centerline, and underneath would keep it out of the line of sight.

Another correction. The 50 barrel I have is an actual 50, not a 510 bore. That changes things again. I have a plethora of 500 s&w magnum brass that would work well but I was hoping for something with more powder capacity.

That's an interesting concept that I'd love to see. It doesn't surprise me that it worked. People don't realize just how damn hot musket caps are. But I already have the rifle built in my head, granted I'll make small corrections along the way as required. As I always say, if I put it on paper it will never work. I just have to build it.

You can always make cases from scratch from brass tube.
Cut to length the proper diameter tube, solder a plug in the ass end.

This is probably going to be the route I take to get the case capacity that I want. It's a custom rifle so it might as well be custom ammo too. I think something that looks like this would be nasty on deer.

I disagree about that bullet. I doubt you'll be able to to push it fast enough for reliable expansion, and the small "me-splat" isn't going to do much damage as the rest of the bullet just slides the tissue out of the way.
Something along these lines, especially the HP, cast from pure lead to maybe 30 or 40:1 would do a much better job IMO

Since you're going .500" instead of .510, I think the HP version above. would perform nicely

Yeah that 404 grain looks like the winning ticket. That sitting on 75 grains of 777 will likely be a winning combination. We can call it the 50 JSD

and even 60-70gr should give good penetration & expansion, if they're cast soft enough. They ought to pack quite a punch.

Dicking around again today. Made this with 500s&w brass. The bullet is just for show. I'd use the 404 grainers that GrapeApe linked to. With the 404 grainers, it'll hold 60 grains of FFF powder. So I guess a 50-60 pinfire it is Also found a wooden stock that I'll be able to cut and use instead of working one from scratch so now I can order my materials for the reciever with the width measurements.

Octagonal: better flat surface for the Pic rail and red dot. You can even use the taper as your long range 20 MOA slant base.

Better still, put one of those side attachments on the Pic rail to hold your ballistic computing cell phone. I wanna see just how many anachronisms we can put on this thing!

So I need a drop calculator AND a thermal, along with 45° backup sights, just incase I get caught in a gunfight at night

But on a serious note, I was considering a spring loaded ejector that would push on the base of the pin and be actuated when the lever is opened. That depends on how anxious and impatient I get when it's close to being done. Not really necessary but it would be cool to have on there. And I'm going to hot blue this when I'm done. I think that'll look slick. Wait til y'all see how I do the hammer and trigger. I've never seen it done before and I think it'll work superb.

I also realized something yesterday. I can make a pinfire shotgun pistol in whatever gauge I'd like, smooth bore and all since pinfires and their ammo aren't firearms or firearm ammo. A SxS pistol would be pretty slick in 16 or 20 gauge. It would be easy to make the brass from scratch and either 3d print the rest of the hull or use cardboard and epoxy it. A guy could even use smokeless just as a middle finger to you know who.
