Three rounds from a SP101 2.25" using a full house 110XTP/W296 hand load left enough discomfort in my wrist to let me know I have a limit. I also do not have big hands, so grip size becomes a limiting factor.
That gun with a factory grip and heavy loads sucks wang. With a Hogue, it changes everything.
As much as I HATE rubber grips from an aesthetic perspective (assuming that’s what you meant by Hogue) they do work really well and make a lot of sense for some guns. I will also say that even the “exotic” wood Hogue grips are a massive improvement over just about all factory grips.
Yep. Rubber. With finger grooves. Which are very polarizing. I HATE finger grooves that don’t fit. I LOVE finger grips that do. Wood, rubber, whatever, if they fit they rock. With the SP101 I didn’t mind the factory rubber grips, but I couldn’t draw it and have it point consistently. I had to fiddle fart around to get a sight picture.

Some nice rubber would look great on your new .480. 🤣

Try shooting it first before adding a set of Goodyears. I don’t think that Bisleys have a set of Goodyears made for them. You’re going to love that grip frame hermano.

I haven’t fired a .480 but never had any issue with full house 44 mag in the Ruger SBH 7in bbl stock grips. Brother’s Redhawk 44 had Hogues and they do feel good but not necessary.

When you reach .454 or .480 and above………it’s just because and not need. For anything in the lower 48. If you can’t shoot. You can’t shoot. Beyond that is just because.

Plus about a thousand.

Between my own heavy interest in the arms of the WWI-WWII period and my Dad's in the Civil War and Old West, we've gotten very nerdy on the development of the metallic cartridge. You can go back to the "Dawn of Brass" period and find plenty of penetration for the likes of bison with .44-40, 38-.40, and .45 Colt. The modern guns and powders let you shoot bigger, faster, but if that physically hurts, you lose nothing in the practical sense by dialing it back. The Brits put a lot of effort into concluding that 265 grains of .45 or 200 grains of .38 at 600 fps was enough to hunt armed men shooting back, and having dabbled with molds casting the original bullets, I can't call them wrong.

Bigger isn't necessarily better and new isn't necessarily progress.

I was thinking, in the corral or in the safe. Free range or guns placed around the house that tend to migrate and stock trailer or vehicle guns….🤣

FINALLY! Someone who gets the game plan…. Unfortunately I’m also feeding them. Just ordered a box of 20 rounds just to make it go bang and 300 Starline cases to keep her running. SIL is casting a few hundred 400gr bullets he’s going to powder coat and size for me and I have a pile of 110 and 296 canisters and even some Lil’Gun which I’ve heard works well in the .480.

And I think it’s time I change my stated goal because I’m really not “thinning the herd”…

What I’m really doing is best described as “upgrading the stock”. Over the years I’ve been selling/trading off the culls and substituting them with better quality specimens…

The gun came with a tape on the barrel that said 40 rounds fired and I was absolutely lied to…

Upon close examination…. This gun was fired ONCE probably by Ruger for QC at the factory!!! This is the ONE chamber mouth that exhibits any carbon, the other 4 are spotless and have no marks usually associated with cleaning of any kind. Also this one chamber is the only one lightly fouled. The other 4 are mirror polished and pristine. The bore is mirror bright and clean. The gun is for all intents and purposes NIB with all original paperwork. 😎

Maybe the previous owner was type A and only shot all 40 rounds in the same cylinder ;)
