A neat update on the Ruger Redhawk…

Post by Wambli Ska »

Soooooooo, I didn’t know this about the gun when I bought it. REALLY innovative design works with or without full moon clips!!!

They arrived today and just tried them out. That’s just a freaking cool bonus!!!!

Sure would look nice with better grips. 😁

I’ll take that under consideration. Any recommendations? Also I want to replace the front sight with a fiber optic one but it appears that the 5.5” doesn’t have a standard Redhawk setup. It has a dovetail. Do you have one with that setup?

And a last one. There is over 1/2” of open cylinder in front of the rounds which means I can get away with just about any size bullet I’d ever want to play with and I know you like heavy for caliber loads. Have you played with heavy .357 loads? Any you’d recommend?

I like it! The half moon idea is fantastic.

So where is the range report? You're retired and live in the desert for crying out loud. :D

Odd that they seem to have dropped the push button front sight Redhawks and GP-100's have used forever. At least you have a nice solid black front sight - you could do worse.

I have had a Smith 640 "Pro Series" for - I dunno - about a decade that uses the same moon-clips-or-not option for .38/.357 brass. I dabbled with the mooners for a while and concluded that for a 5-shot pocket gun, they're a pain in the ass and I'm happier running with a couple of speed strips that are more comfortable to sit on and aren't going to bend.

For a full-size hogleg that's likely going to run in conjunction with a belt holster and presumably pouches, it might make more sense.
WWJMBD?

I thought so too! Now that I get how it works the idea is really growing on me! Will make a good roam around the desert on a holster gun 👍👍

You know I’m screwing with you, right?

On mine, I used a roll pin fiber optic front sight.

Heaviest I’ve used in the .357 Mag is 180gr Powder Coated.

Yep, kind’a cool. And there’s a lot of weight/metal on this gun to take the recoil of even the worst kicker loads you can come up with.

I need to measure the dovetail and height to see what I’m working with here. Not a target gun so I’d like to get something that will work faster for shots of opportunity or even SD if ever needed.

This crew served puppy is not on my CC rotation so the ability to switch different types of ammo in a second is kind of nifty.

Of course I know 😁 But I’m always interested in your opinion. You get more trigger time in a week than most of us get in years 👍👍

The roll pin setup unfortunately won’t work in this one. The search begins. I think 180s will probably be my preferred feed for this gun. It’s a deep hole in front of the loaded rounds. This is how much room I have in front of 158gr bullets seated crimped on cannelure.

I have so much room in there I could probably run rifle bullets 🤣

I think my biggest concern is at which weight/speed point they’ll just start tumbling.

Sako may have a point. . .

That looks to be the RCBS 200 grain gas check flat point that gets a lot of use in .35 Remington and similar beasts. If it fits the Redhawk cylinder crimped in .357 brass, that's probably worth considering as your long range bullet. If it's close, it might even be worth trimming the brass back a little to make it work.
