That looks to be the RCBS 200 grain gas check flat point that gets a lot of use in .35 Remington and similar beasts. If it fits the Redhawk cylinder crimped in .357 brass, that's probably worth considering as your long range bullet. If it's close, it might even be worth trimming the brass back a little to make it work.

I use them in my 35 remington, they shoot quite well.

Out of curiosity I mocked up a cartridge to see if a Rossi 92 would cycle that length of 357. No dice. 1.640” is the longest I can cycle through a 92 action, it’s also the minimum I would feel good with in running in a SAA colt with a cylinder length of 1.62 plus the 357 rim for a total of 1.673 total usable cylinder length.

Be careful though, IIRC, 38spcl cases aren't made as strong as the magnum cases.

Kinda depends. . .Starline says the only difference between their standard and +P .38 brass is the headstamp, and by extension, they also say the .357 is basically a lengthened version of the .38 Special. A lot of their business model operates around making "families" of cartridges that were/are identical in all respects but for overall length, such as .45-70, .45-90, .45-100, etc... The method for that is gonna be obvious - build them all with a case head for the hottest thing it might encounter, and just cut them off where you want the mouth to be.

I've read that some of the ammo factories have used a dedicated case for light wadcutter match loads that has a differing internal profile - presumably thinner walls farther back from the mouth to accommodate the 148 grainers seated fully inside the case. A cannelure around the case is the common indicator.

But more to the point - there is a time and place to load up with brass you scrounged at the range. The loads we are talking about on this thread are NOT it.

Discussing the OTHER extreme for that Redhawk a little - I recently had both my big S&W N-frame .357's out running some of the 170gr/650 fps loads we concocted for practice in my Pop's scandium J-frame. That's some serious fun!
