Giant deck removal (probably a Jermey question)

Post by Justsomedude »

I really could have let auto correct turn that title around on me,

Anyhow. We have a gigantic deck in the backyard with a good sized gazebo as part of the back corner of if. The guy that we bought the house from built it and I don't think he believed in a square or level and it looks like absolute dog shìt.

He actually built it around the 30' above ground pool that was there (I already tore it down because he put it up crooked too) so there's a gaping hole in the middle of the deck also which adds to how bad it looks. It's probably roughly 40x50' and elevated about 4.5' from the ground with the posts concreted into the ground, thankfully not very well.

I want to take it all down this Spring and I know to look to make sure it's not anchored into the house but the whole thing is all screwed together. I seriously think he used drywall screws and not deck screws. I thought about renting a Bobcat and just tearing it out and busting it up but that seems excessive. Is there a better way to handle this? I'm planning on putting in a smaller one which will lengthen my shooting range 😁, plus it'll make us look about 30% less white trashy.

Duckbill deck wrecker tool. Assuming it really is drywall screws. Good screws would be a challenge for it.

I’d just unscrew it and see if I could reuse the lumber for another project.

How is it anchored to the ground?

Chainsaw. Avoid screws. Wear a mask. Pressure treated has chemicals you don't want to breathe.

The screws are not coming out. They wood is garbage, completely bowed and warped. It was in bad shape when we moved in and I don't know if he used the wrong stuff or what. Is it recommended to remove the top pieces and then the frame or just chainsaw the whole thing? I'd use the duck bill tool if I was going to just replace the top boards but I want it gone gone.

That's a damn good idea. I'm hoping my tractor will yank them out but if not, that'll be my go to. Either way, this will be alot of work and alot of trash and I don't know if I'm dedicated enough to rent a roll off dumpster or not.

Oh do yourself a BIG favor and rent that commercial dumpster and have the company set it right next to the deck so you don’t have to cart debris too far. Cuts the workload by at least 50% and makes the job go WAY faster.

Hopefully your screws are not stripped. I did the same at my late father's. First removed deck planks then frame. His was anchored to the house, so worked my way in to it. Luckily it was anchored properly and removing screws and bolts was the difficult part

Oh wait, screwed up screws? Cut between them working your way to the house. Sorry, it's not gonna be easy. Be real careful near the house in case he did something stupid.

Unfortunately there is no way to get a dumpster near the deck because of the garage and then the fenced in yard so it'll be a bunch of trips back and forth.

Sections of the fence can be removed and replaced after the dumpster is gone! You only need an 8 ft space to get the dumpster in. Cut a post 6 inches above ground and the truck will clear it. To burn you have to deal with the time baby sitting the fire, ash and dead spots. A chain saw and saws-all reduce much of time and make a compact load. A strong skill saw will do a lot of the work also. Hire a couple local kids to load the dumpster and the demolition will go quickly.

The only way to get into the backyard by removing the fence would involve going onto the neighbors property and we don't exactly have a friendly relationship. He's the one that should hope I never get a terminal diagnosis, so that's not an option.
