Theoretical question on a build, maybe…

Post by Wambli Ska »

So I’ve been thinking about maybe building a .300 BO of some sort to run it suppressed. I even thought about a manually cycled AR or a tiny, super light bolt action gun. And then I find an ad today selling GOOD 7.62x39 ammo for $13 for 20 rounds. What would .300 BO give me that a 7.62x39 (barreled to the same twist) wouldn’t?

I’ll preface this by saying I have done ZERO research in this yet. Counting on you guys saving me from endless hours of drivel by pseudo experts on the internet thingy…

With the .300:
1. You wouldn’t be shooting a communist round.
2. Standard AR magazines.
3. More selection of (ick) factory ammo.
4. You’d be cool.

Bullet versatility is the biggest advantage of the BO in my mind. On the other hand, I have a 7.62x39 upper laying around doing nothing :D

I’m a fan of the 300 blackout even though some here loath it. If I were looking to build another one. A Ruger ranch rifle with a decent stock would be cool a straight pull AR would be fun. A Howa mini action in 300 would be great. I would go bolt action though they trap more gas and would be quieter……

Or, a simple barrel change you could have a 6 arc!!!

I’ve got a straight pull .300 AR pistol, which is niche for my states laws for deer season. “Alternative methods” season.
Handgun, or muzzle loaders. Perfect for that.

But for an all around .300, especially for when you get a can, bolt gun is the answer.

Wouldn’t a manual gun be quieter all around? And no gas issues?

Not looking to dump mags, just ultra quiet single rounds to target.

Actually something is shaping in my head. Just looked at Deadfoot arms and I can get a folding stock adapter for the lower I already have registered as an SBR. So basically a rifle stocked gun that I can fit with a suppressor in a daypack 😎

And the adapter would allow me to fire the gun with the stock folded if I want to like a SP!

Yes, but the straight pull ar can be a bitch with sticky rounds.

However, a folding stock would allow me to put up with sticky.

And my pistol is completely different in that it has a chopped off BCG that doesn’t leave the lower. And no buffer or spring.
With a “regular” straight pull ar, you could pull the handle and let it fly

then find a 8.5-10.5" upper and go forth quietly

If you want something shorter than that, just go with a 9mm. Sub performance below 8.5" is questionable, at best

Interesting….. I’ve been meaning to get the Broken Foot adapter for my 5.56 AR SBR. Maybe I should pull the trigger on that and see where it takes me…

Already have a 9mm AR with the adapter but it’s a 4.5” barrel which is amazing for indoor moving around. That one is definitely getting a shorty can soon just because.

The Blackout shoots .308 bullets, the 7.62x39 does not. That gives you everything in the range of 110-130 grain all-copper Barnes supersonics; M1 carbine bullets for plinkers; any blunt or flat nose you'd care to load in a .30-30; on up to the 220 grainer of a .30-40 Krag.

7.62X39 has a well documented platform designed for it, sayin'

So everything I read says I need a 10" barrel for the BO. Is that right? I really didn't want a "big" gun. Love my 7.5" 5.56 and my 4.5" 9mm. This will be at THE MOST for my intended uses a 100 yrd gun.

Mines 9” long.

So is the barrel on my .300 pistol. I’m getting 2150 FPS out of a 110 grain Barnes. Which is perfectly fine for deer sized critters.
But the fun is in the subsonic loads. Well, if you have a can. Which, who doesn’t? That would be silly.

I called your wife and she said it ain't...

The idea is to go with a can for sure. AND to keep it as compact as possible so as I tell my wife all the time "every inch counts" (:lowhangingfruitjustforyou: ).

I guess 9" would be fine for this if I can go with a short can. Is there such a thing as a suppressed barrel so I can do SBR/Suppressed on one form as you can with 10/22s and pistols?

I've got an 8.5" on my BO pistol. It loses VERY LITTLE velocity over my 16" with subs. It does lose more with lighter bullet supers

I think 8-9” is a decent sweet spot for this build. If I ever use it for hunting it’ll be a kill of opportunity, not an intentional pursuit. I have other guns more suited for that purpose. I think I’ll be ordering the Dead Foot Arms adapter and converting my SBR to a folding stock and the deciding on barrel/can. I might just convert the SBR to a dedicated 300. As a 5.56 it doesn’t get much use besides being a giggle machine.

Hell, just replace the 7" 5.56 bbl with an 8-9" BO bbl, and Bob's your uncle
