It's really starting to sound like that is the likely path... The integrated suppressors seem to have shiety reviews.

You can get a lot more utility from a separate can

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
I've thought about that but I don't know that I want to compromise on how quiet I want (or can get) this to be by buying a 9mm can and moving it from one AR to the other. I think I like the idea of caliber specific dedicated cans on my short ARs for best sound suppression performance. then again, I don't know how much I'd "lose" by having one can for both.
Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
I had a Remington 70 (?) BO with a can. It was quiet with heavy bullets but I didn't have need for a heavy-ass .300 BO. So I sold it.
Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
Why by a 9mm can? Just make sure the 30 cal can you purchase is rated for the barrel length you wantWambli Ska wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 12:26 am I've thought about that but I don't know that I want to compromise on how quiet I want (or can get) this to be by buying a 9mm can and moving it from one AR to the other. Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
If this makes me giggle I’ll probably build an ultra light bolt action with a can in 300 BO. I think 125gr SPs at moderate speeds with a suppressor have a place in my rifle rack. The heavy 220s will be range steel plinkers unless something up close just needs to go meet its maker and the AR is the tool that’s handy.

The 9mm can is for my AR pistol.GrapeApe wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 1:07 amWhy by a 9mm can? This is what I'm talking about, the first random can I found at Silencer Shop that listed caliber/barrel limits
https://www.silencershop.com/yhm-resonator-r2.html
And this is my "form 4" 30 cal. I've been pleased with it22” – 300 PRC, 300 Win mag, 6.5 PRC, 270 Win, 7mm mag
14.5” – .308, 6.5 Creedmoor, .243 Win
10.3” – 5.56/223, 6.5 Grendel, 6 ARC
7” – 300 Blackout Supersonic
5” – 300 Blackout Subsonic

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
My aero precision Lahar 30l has no barrel length restrictions, 300 win mag and full auto rated….. it’s no light weight but I love it.
Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
Silencerco Omega 36M. Run it on anything you want, 36 cal or smaller. Rifle, pistol, rated up to 338 Lapua. Modular, so you can run it in short or long configurations, depending on what it’s being used for.
That would give a very good start. I wouldn’t think too much about matching suppressor diameter to caliber. At least not to start. Get a good, versatile suppressor and start using it. I shoot a 10.5” AR pistol in 5.56 with full loads through a 30 cal Silencerco Harvester EVO and that gun is easily fine with no ear pro. My 6ARC is STUPID quiet with it. I’d shoot 223 and 308 out of a 36 cal can, no problem. It doesn’t make THAT much of a difference unless there’s a huge difference in size or it’s a crappy can.

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
They don't recommend the omega 36M for shorter than 10" with 5.56.
https://silencerco.com/silencers/omega-36m/
Just something else to think about.
Since I keep thinking about both a 9mm pcc and a 350L, the 36M might be my next can

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
Put it this way. You get a 35 cal can so you can run it up to 9mm. 9mm is .355. 308 Win is obviously .308. Thats 47 thousandths of an inch smaller. Or .0235 clearance between the baffles and bullet. That’ll be fine.
.224 is 131 thousandths of an inch smaller diameter than a 35 cal suppressor. Or .0655 clearance between the bullet and baffles. It’ll also be fine.

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
They also don’t recommend 10.5” barrels with the Harvester EVO. But they did when I bought it and changed it afterwards. Because lawyer stuff. I have an email from Silencerco tech that mine is fine to run on my 10.5” as long as I keep the rate of fire slow. I think he said about 10 rounds per minute. Which is slow. But that’s still a round every 6 seconds. He even said they would warranty it if I ever had a problem.
I’d run a 36M the same way.

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
I also get the compact thing. But you might as well carry a 22 mag if you’re going much shorter that 10” with 223. I chronographed and played with a 7.5” 5.56 SBR once. It’s pretty much 22 mag ballistics.
300 BO with the goal of being subsonic, go for it.

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
I had a conversation with a guy at the range that was going to shoot 223 subs through a carbine…. I suggested to shoot a 22Lr get the same results. He laughed and walked away, then turned back after about five steps and said great a new rifle and can.

Damn! Lots of great info! Thanks!!!!!
Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
Jay, notice they said SHORTER than 10", So I'm not surprised they said you're 10.5" would be okay.
Having 2 form 1 silencers (legally home built) I'm well aware of the clearances. I went 0.025" over on the holes in my baffles and end cap, but I'd still be "puckered" trying to put a 8mm bullet (0.323") through my "30 cal" can, even though, technically, .308+.025= .333, so it SHOULD be fine. (I ain't doing it)
I'm not saying anything bad about your Omega, even said it might be my next can purchase.

Yep, the speed of sound doesn't care about a bullet's diameter or weight.
The folks wanting "more power" in subsonic are the reason the 8.6mmBO/338ARC subs exist.
A 307gr bullet @1050fps would be a freight train

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
BTW I built my 7.5 SBR with the specialized purpose of dumping a whole lot of 45gr HPs out of the barrel indoors, basically my HD weapon. You're right I could probably get the same ballistics from a 22mag but the reliability and capacity in a fight worthy platform just ins't there in a rimfire. But I understand what you are saying and agree completely.
Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
I’ve always thought, the .308 Win can be everything the BO tries to be and everything it can’t.

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
It kinda makes sense in a gas gun just because of overall size/weight. In a bolt gun. No sense.

Re: Theoretical question on a build, maybe…
I have two short ARs. Fun to play around with and the concept is there. Outside of 50gr or less bullets, the application isn’t really there. I’ve decided 10”+ is about as short as terminal effect will allow with heavier bullets.Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Wed May 14, 2025 2:26 pmBTW I built my 7.5 SBR with the specialized purpose of dumping a whole lot of 45gr HPs out of the barrel indoors, basically my HD weapon. I probably need to rebarrel at least one of my 7.5” pistols to something else.

Oh, and I have a BO pistol now. Passed on from a friend who passed. No clue what I’m going to do with it.

You want a lightly used BO barrel?
