Sako AV scope mounts.

Post by fisheadgib »

I've got a Sako AV in 7mm rem mag that I bought in the late 80's and I've been using the EAW quick release mounts that it came with but I want to lighten the rifle and the EAW'S are very heavy.. I don't know much about Sako's but it seems that AV's and mounts for them aren't so common. At one time Talley made a unitized base and ring for them and that's what I would like but they don't seem to be available now. I know there's still a few people here with knowledge about walnut and blued steel rifles, anybody know of a lighter mount system available for this rifle?

If it’s the same as a Tikka, (they are same same, right?) then I do know there is a couple different possible thread pitches based on the year made. Ones metric and ones not. May apply, may not.

These were on a 7mm I had some years ago. If you can use them, they are yours. thought I had the bases as well but can't find them.
No idea if they are any lighter than th QD you had but thought I'd offer.

I wish, it seems many Sako models use a wide variety of mounts. Some models are the same as a Tikka, many aren't.

Are those bases and rings or just rings? And how high are they? I think I need a medium height as I have a Zeiss 3x15x42. If those will work for me, I'd gladly take them. If you want the EAW 1" quick release mounts you can have them, I understand they're pretty expensive but I have no use for them.

Went back and edited the post, no bases but they are available on amazon I see. Rough measurement is 0.610 without taking the centering insert out.

Sako, I appreciate the offer but I finally figured out what will work. After some questions on the Sako collectors forum, it appears CPJ was mostly right about most models being similar. I actually spoke with Leupold, Talley, Sportsmans Warehouse, Brownells, and Midway and they all appeared to be reading from a chart that listed which mounts were required for which models and they were all inaccurate. Talley gave the best info of all of them but they were still off a little. In spite of the guy at Leupold telling me that they don't list anything for a Sako AV, I'm going with the Leupold ringmounts as they're simpler and weigh less than half of the EAW mounts that I have.

The only other issues I’ve heard about was from EGW website, (I think it was there) that the holes weren’t tapped all that deep. That once one determines the screw size they should run a bottoming tap in the hole for good measure.
My buddy did that, and got a bonus thread or two.
