Anyone bag a gobbler this spring?
Re: Anyone bag a gobbler this spring?
I was sort of motivated to go, but it rained the weekends I had time, so no. A lot of patients had success, mostly kids

Nope. Didn’t go. Between work, rain, and an otherwise hectic 2025, the 3 mondays I took off to go were spent NOT chasing birds.

Re: Anyone bag a gobbler this spring?
Nope, been 1 time in my life.
Have had a flock nearly run over me when I was hunting from the ground though.
No fall season here though.

I made it out once, the guy who was calling for me shot a Tom with an eight inch beard.

Don't even know if we have any around here

An old hunt and fish bud from Missouri sent me the pic

Good one @Freezer
They say they are around here, but I haven't seen or heard one since moving to the panhandle.

Nate gave me the breasts. Folks said they would be tough and dry but I had to try. I put them in a brine overnight then wrapped them in bacon. I used the Ninja to smoke them at 275 degrees until they reached 160 degrees. It was some of the best turkey I ever had.
My hunting partner Tom, got a Jake from the Castle Blind and did the same thing with the entire bird with the same results.
It's raining and chilly here today so I might go to the Castle and give it one more try this afternoon. Today is the last day for spring Turkey.

I used to hunt and guide for turkey all the time on the ranch I managed back in the 90s. I really enjoyed calling them. Even got one with my bow!
Haven’t hunted them since. They are around here. But, not on any of the places I have access to now.

I've had the chance to shoot turkeys, but I have ZERO experience with what I should do with it afterwards. I suppose I should get my YouTube certification on cleaning a big bird and try it sometime.

Cut up the middle of the breast, lay the skin to the side.
Cut off the breasts. Let the yotes eat the rest.

Wild turkeys arent butterballs!
So CPJ has the field prep right
Brine them overnight and bake.

Gutting wild turkeys stinks!!! Worse than a gut shot pig. They just smell bad.

Take the breasts, either butterfly them or cut them into medallions, beat hell out of them with a meat tenderizer and chicken fry them...serve with mashed potatoes, gravy and corn...

This is the only way to deal with them. I’ve also taken the thighs and legs and seasoned them with Adobo, cumin and chili powder and left in the fridge overnight, put in a slow cooker next day with some chicken stock and when the meat falls off the bone make tacos with it. NEVER go into the body cavity
