New .22.

Post by CPJ 2.0 »

I’ve seen these Savage Rascals for years. Always wanted one. Why did I want a single shot kids rifle? Dunno. Just did. I saw the heavy barrel version with a fatass bolt handle while out in Utah last week. Hmmm. $325. Naw. Don’t want it that bad.

The regular barreled ones are around $180.

Do a little looking around, ordered one from a local LGS and it was like $175. Seems REALLY cheap compared to the one in Utah. Overheard one of the owners saying they lost money on this one, they had it priced wrong. They weren’t mad, and didn’t say anything to me. Cool.

Anyway, it’s got an accutrigger that came adjusted at 2.5 pounds. Low as it goes. I’ll address that. Add some trigger shims to remove some side play. And a few other tweaks. Eventually it will be put in a chassis. I’ve got some ideas for a different twist on the “traditional” chassis. Being a single shot makes that process easier, no mag to deal with.

Scope choice? VX-2 6-18 with stupid super fine invisible to old man eyes crosshairs. Why? Why not!? Actually I’m doing some scope swapping and figured this would be perfect what for testing this rifle.

As to the color? The stocks going anyway, and it happened to be the cheapest color. 😬

I’m still half tempted to get one of the regular barreled versions to make an ultralight pack rifle.

Curious as to accuracy.

Me as well.

Planes to shoot it, as is. Lap the barrel. Shoot again. Compare notes.

Then throw it in the chassis. Which, my original idea…I think I can still make work but there’s a single shot follower that wraps under the bottom of the action, and under part of the barrel. I’ve got an idea, but need to measure.

Which chassis did you go with and how much do you have into it? I have a Savage Cub laying around that I won

EXTREMELY rough idea of what I’m thinking, I was farting around getting ideas. . Clamps on the barrel thereby floating the barrel and action. I’ve seen it on some bench guns.

You have the pink filament to make it match the rest of the stock?

Using purple.
Why? I’ve got two rolls, and one is currently installed in the printer.

Much better.
Scope is still too far back, but it is what it is for now. Can’t go forward.

Pretty sure that little gun was designed for something a little smaller than the Hubble Telescope

Scopes should be as long as the barrel. It’s the law.

I’m pondering while at work today just what the best way to bench this thing will be. It’s like trying to bench rest a broom stick. The thing is tiny. I’ve got some sketchy ideas, we shall see. 😬

I was thinking about that too! I’ve never had to deal with anything that tiny . Again highly interested in how this moves along.

Shooting coat and a cuff sling?

Are these things a clamp-in barrel? Seems like that .21 Sharp concept could be explored for. . .I don't know. . .reasons.
WWJMBD?

I believe we should stand on Ceremony. . . while our friends handcuff the sanctimonious little prick and take him away.

Barrel is pressed and pinned. 🙁

I’ve considered removing that style before and threading the action so I could spin barrels in at will. Things only a madman with tools and time would do to an inexpensive .22. I haven’t looked super close at this one, but a quick glance shows some funky geometry on the breech that I’ve seen with others, that I don’t really want to make.

I said the word inexpensive .22. Yeah. Right. I’m now “I remember when you could find the used Kmart .22 bolt actions for $60 at the LGS!” years old. 🙄

These days inexpensive means $200+ for a beat up bolt .22.
