Enfield or Mauser action
Enfield or Mauser action
My LGS has this rifle in 7 mag for sale. Can anyone tell from the pictures what brand action this is?

Can it be rechambered/barreled to 7x57?

1914 Enfield, which the 1917 Enfield is based on.

According to the interwebs it has a 1:10.5 twist, which is kind of slow.
I remember those being quite common at one time.

Re: Enfield or Mauser action
BUT, that is a GREAT action for a custom. And all the heavy work is already done. Needs a barrel, good trigger and a nice stock.
Re-chambering this to the smaller case means cutting a bit of metal off the chamber side of the barrel and since you need to get rid of pretty much the whole chamber you’ll be losing inches off the total length. IF someone would take it on the job you also have to get a new bolt since the face is too big for the Mauser rim and fit/head space…. More $$$$, Plus you’ll end up with a really ugly gap between what’s left of the barrel and the stock because of barrel taper.
If it’s a good deal that’s a great classic sporter in a desirable round that you could download to what your looking for. Or it’s an easy rebarreling proposition and I’d take the opportunity to build a kick ass .338 Win Mag and sell the 7mm REM Mag barrel to help fund it.

Re: Enfield or Mauser action
I have a M77 in 7 mag so I don’t need another 7 mag. And I don’t’ have a need for anything larger. I’ve always wanted a 7x57. Actually I want a Ruger #1 in .275 Rigby. But I would take a bolt gun and have it rebarreled. In a perfect world the barrel would be engraved .275 Rigby. I really didn’t think it would be real simple to rechamber this gun. But I knew there were some people on here who would have the answers.
I really appreciate y’all taking the time to respond!!

Re: Enfield or Mauser action
If I ever put together a 7x57 I would also have it marked .275 Rigby. If I ever decide to rebarrel my Zastava M70 in 7mm-08 I may go that route. No real gain, but I have not been terribly impressed with the factory barrel so far.
Not sure what your other options are with an action that length and a bolt face opened up for a belted case. Maybe a 6.5 PRC since you already have a 7mm RM? That combination might piss off a lot of people.

Re: Enfield or Mauser action
I don’t need the 7x57. I’ve just always wanted one. Not common down here at all.
If I buy another centerfire bolt gun it’ll probably be .243 or .223.
Why?
. Same with the 7x57: just ‘cause.
I read an article or two about Kilimanjaro Bell and decided I wouldn’t mind having a gun with a barrel engraved with .275 Rigby. It’s different.
Everyone down here has/had a .270 or 30-06. 40-50 yrs ago you weren’t a serious deer hunter if you didn’t have a Rem. 742 in 30-06, see-thru mounts and a 3x9 of some sort. The REALLY serious hunters, not many of those, had bolt actions. Now it’s 6.5 CM.

Years ago, I saw one of those put together by Griffin &Howe as a safari rifle in .450 Ashurst

My .404 Jeffery is built on a 1917 action.

Re: Enfield or Mauser action
The action itself will have been made by Winchester, Remington, or Remington/Eddystone, but you'll have to pull the scope base to find out.
The P14 makes sense for a belted magnum conversion because .303 British shares the same .532" case head diameter as all the .300 H&H descendants, but that's a bad place to start for the .473" case head of the 7x57 - - you'd want the U.S. M1917 version for that.
Cheaper path would be to search GB for one of the Ruger 77's - they're out there.

Another 7x57 fan, I knew there was a reason I liked you.

I appreciate that!!!
I don’t know why, but I’ve been a fan of that caliber for a long time. Guess I just kinda like odd stuff

Re: Enfield or Mauser action
I had JSD build my grail gun, in 7x57.
Old style Ruger 77, Ruger international stock (New, old stock) Lilja BBL, Timney trigger. Butterknife bolt handle
