My woods gun is finished

Post by Freezer »

and I'm excited. It turned out almost exactly as I had planned, the trigger is a little heavy and the weight is about a half pound over what I want but I can correct both issues in the future. It has an 18" barrel and chambered in 6 ARC. I'll sight it in this afternoon. More details later this evening after I finish another project.

That came out pretty cool, what bullet weight does it like?

Reap Scy bullpup stock
Composite 80% AR 15 lower with composite trigger and pins
Bear Creel Arsenal Bolt Action
X Caliber Barrel 18 inch light barrel with 10 straight flutes, chambered in 6 ARC, 1:7 5R twist, no gas ports with Rubber City bolt
SWFA 2.5 x 10 32 mm scope
Hornady 103 gr ELDX Precision Hunter ammo. From an 18" barrel 2650 fps
weight 7 lbs OAL 26.75 inches

I was at my nephew's yesterday to finish and tune this rifle and complete a plumbing job for him. This is a true custom concept rifle that we've been talking about for a year. I really like the way it turned out! I needed something that would enable me to still hunt again, I have two steel knees, numerous back issues and need a walking stick in the woods. The bolt can be worked while shouldered but will take some getting used to, it has a very short lift. Until it breaks in better you have to work it like a rented mule. Being a concept rifle there are some things I will change in the future to get it the way I want it. For now it will serve me very well. The Scy bullpup stock has a trigger linkage that adds a pound to the trigger pull giving this rifle a 4.5 lb trigger pull. I really don't like that and will install new springs and tune it up to break at three lbs. Other than that the trigger isn't bad. The Bear Creek action is serviceable. The only other AR Bolt available costs $1300 and uses proprietary parts. The BC was $189 and uses standard AR parts. I wasn't sure how high I needed the scope base should be and the LGS had limited options, in the future it will have a one piece scope base. My nephew gave me the hand guard and I'll change that to a magnesium alloy along with an alloy barrel nut to cut the weight a bit. When I finish it should weigh 6.25 to 6.5 lbs. X Caliber guaranteed sub MOA if I used their suggested bolt which I did and it didn't disappoint! It shoots better than I can hold. We went to the range today, I was cold and I'm not used to the heavy trigger and still shot a 1 inch group. Alas this is bitter sweet, it will replace my 99 Savage as my field gun. This rifle/cartridge combo will perform well out to 300 yards.

My nephew has a ballistics calculator that is amazing, it took all the variables into consideration when calculating trajectory, from my specific scope to the height of the scope over the bore and the specific ammo I'll shoot. I'll have the table taped to the stock in case I get that rare long shot.

Not gonna lie, I was not buying into your idea as you've gone through this project. I was wrong to discount it. That looks like a really handy rig!

I didn't have a chance to handle the rifle much with my nephew's sling attached Saturday as I had other projects to finish and needed bench time to sight it in. The sling arrived last night and I installed it this morning. The handling characteristics with the sling are amazing! The weight is behind the pistol grip and it comes to my shoulder quickly with the right hand only. It's actually easier to get on target than my other rifles. It carries very well in my right hand at hip level. The AR grip permits me to draw the rifle tight to my shoulder quickly and with the weight between my shoulder and right hand, I could easily fire one handed. I have an adjustable walking stick with a wrist lanyard and V on top. I can let go of my stick to grip the hand guard or prop the V under it fast and easy. If you could do this on an AR 10 platform it would be the ultimate mountain rifle.

This rifle/cartridge combo is amazing!

I've never been a fan of the AR 15. I used them in the military where it was a useful tool but I hated the spring twang. In Pa we can't hunt with semi autos so ARs didn't interest me. with my small house the AR isn't a good HD choice. I built an AR pistol, shot it a couple times then got rid of it. It cost me $100 every time I took it to the range. I'd rather shoot my MK II and 10/22. As for bullpups, I had absolutely no interest in them until we discussed this project. Again semi autos don't float my boat. Bear Creek's bolt action was a game changer. The main complaints I had with Bear Creek are, they only offer heavy barrels and the quality of their barrels is hit and miss. In addition they only offer their barrels with gas ports which, I didn't need.

I know you built it as a stalking gun, but that would be a handy as hell tree stand gun!!! And I'm thinking I could easily make a bracket to carry something like that ready to go inside the cab of my Gladiator.

Here's my nephew's ballistic chart for this rifle. With 1.3" high @ 100 yards I can hold dead out to 233 yards. My most common shots are a max of 180 yards.

Yep, and living out west you could put a longer barrel on it. In a 22" barrel the 6 Arc does 2800 fps. 18" was as short as I could go and still be legal, 26" OAL.Best part is, it's an AR. Four pins and you can put any standard upper on it that you like! If you don't mind the weight BC has uppers, auto and bolt, for less than $225.

That’s only a 3” kill zone. You can go farther than what’s listed.
