Unexpected Yugo 8mm Mauser

I think that’s just packing grease and hopefully will just punch out with the first pass through the bore.

I bought an Enfield years ago, N1 MkIII that had a bore like that after cleaning. I actually shot decent after a few shots. Don't give up hope yet.

I've gotten a few of those over the years. Wrap a bore brush you don't care about with coarse steel wool (hey you have nothing to lose) soak in solvent and punch through the barrel back and forth a bunch of times. Keep doing it until no more junk comes out of the bore. I alternate between copper solvent and carbon solvent. The rifling looks like it's still strong so there is a chance it will shoot.

Depending on what happens at the range tomorrow, that may be my next step. Barrel… save up… stock… save up… thermal…

I had to do that with my 7x57 Mauser. Original barrel was toast. Looked like a poorly done asphalt road. Bullets hit sideways. Got a green mountain barrel, she’s a dream now. While not original, it was a relatively cheap fix to use the action and sporterized stock. For a salvage plan.

Somebody long before you made that barrel junk. No sense wasting time, effort or money on it. The bore determines the condition of the rifle. If the bore is bad, it doesn’t matter what the rest of the rifle is, at that price point. That’s an action with junk currently attached to it. New barrel, stock and trigger. Go from there.

That’s the bastard child intermediate action that doesn’t interchange with other Mauser. I bought a barreled action with no bolt along with some other random stuff some years back. Still sitting in the safe.


Far be it from me to discourage one from spending time and money on something that’s not worth the time and money, (I’m an expert on the subject, trust me bro) but I’d shoot it and that’s it. Maybe toss a red dot on it. The rear sight base is soldered on, which sucks for the idea that I have. But I’m FULL of bad ideas.
If we can confirm that our rear sights match, I’ll have something to measure from. Maybe whip up a red dot mount.

The good news is that the rear sight base is soft soldered on and remove very easily. They are an absolute whoʻre to find a bolt for though. That's a dredge Numrich and re-headspace ordeal. Been there, lost money, never again.

But, those are a dream to rebarrel.

Just totally out of curiosity…. And for Science..
I was watching a video the other day that had a bench rest shooter going over bore cleaning procedures on his bench rest rifles. Apparently they clean their bores regularly. Including between matches at shoots. One thing he mentioned that is curious to me, is he mentioned using liquid graphited lock fluid in his bore after cleaning. The blue bottle Lock Ease stuff. Soaked patches with it, ran it back and forth in the bore. Essentially, the graphite fills in imperfections in the bore and the liquid evaporates. He said it gave him better consistency and cold bore shots.

So, IF that bore is able to be cleaned and shot, shoot it with the regular clean bore. Then clean and run a bunch of that graphite fluid through it and shoot again. Just to see if anything changes. It would be a pretty extreme test of the theory. But there’s nothing to lose with this barrel.

That case pretty much proves you bought a donor action, unless you want to have it rebored and rechambered for a wildcat (.35x57 imp maybe?)

I suspect the green mtn barrel would be a much more economically feasible option.

I'm not sure you can fit a x62 in that action???

Oooooo-Kay. Finally have time to go through all this.

My buddy that got me into this met me at the range with HIS rifle, which externally is in “better” shape, and internally is only slightly better. His bore also looks like a 100 year old iron sewer pipe, but externally looks like this:

So, I got 5 rounds of S&B 196 grain “SPCE” loaded in the mag of my rifle, ran the target out to 50 yards (minimum for the rifle range), and cranked off the first round.
This thing kicks. Damn.

But then I tried to load the next round… well, the bolt would not unlock. After beating on the bolt handle with a board, and doing some other sketchy stuff, I finally got in opened. You can see what the issue was in the picture above. Obvious pitting and boogered up chamber in the neck and shoulder area in the chamber.
Well… s#!t. Might as well see if it can group. Fired two more rounds, muscling the bolt open after each one.
Not one round hit the 2’x3’ paper at 50 yards.
Well, at least I have a functioning action!

My buddy’s rifle fared a bit better, printing 12” ‘groups’ at 50 yards, but was at least able to cycle rounds without using a hammer. Here is a cool shot I got of his gun running some ancient surplus crap through it.

His “prettier” stock kicked even worse since the buttstock had been thinned to probably only an inch wide at the buttplate. I fired about 7 rounds through his and called it the ‘flinch inducer’.


After I got it home, I looked down the bore to see if the 3 rounds might have cleared things up.
