Well I took the plunge with Starlink.

Post by Wambli Ska »

I have Verizon Wireless internet at 200Mb level which is not bad but we max out routinely. So now that we’re moving we went to Verizon since wife and I have a business account to figure out a way to temporarily have internet service in both the old and new house as I move (overlapping homes for 2 months). I thought maybe I could rent a router for a few months or smithing similar. NOPE, their “solution” was a 3 year contract with a new router for the new house, paying for both services for 2 months and the cancelling the old Service.

And their upgrade to 400 Mbs Service is $199!!!!!!!/month. Now we need this because wife and I work from home and we do serious streaming level services for group business video conference calls (both wife and) that needs to be flawless. Plus she downloads and uploads entire websites for her customers and when we test, most nights I have 3 different TVs going at the same time everyone watching something different, while surfing the net and other stuff going on in the background like backups and such.

So I figured everyone I know is switching to Starlink and a quick look finds that the will give me 400Mb Service, AND free equipment and install for the home unit, AND a 3g router for the house and an extender which I’ll need in the new house, AND they’ll throw in a free Mini system I can use while Camping and off-roading!!!! All on one account.

So screw Verizon…. Tap, I’m out. Showed the deal to our Verizon business rep and he literally said, “Yeah I’d take that too.” System will be here in a week so range report when we get it up and running.

I'm not sure on any numbers, but we have one of those little 5g Verizon wifi thingamajigs (technical terminology) and it works great for everything and the whole family. My wife also works from home, using the internet the whole time. I think it's about $40 or so a month.

Friends if mine (with death wishes) are avid tornado chasers and have Star Link installed in vehicles. I got a quick demo the data rates were higher than advertised and there is wifi extending at least 30yds outside the truck. This also allows wifi calling when outside cell phone coverage.

You rely on the internet to work... I use lack of internet access as an excuse not to work (my second job)... we are not the same.

I am Starlink curious, but I'm not ready to give up my excuse to vanish. I also find I don't need that level of access in my life, yet...

The Verizon 5G service is pretty good. At that price point you’re getting their basic service that is fine for most home owners or small businesses. My wife is a website designer and maintains a bunch of her customer’s sites. I consistently have 4-10 people from all over the world on a high quality Video Conference calls that can last for hours. All this while loading full websites and running multi-Tb sized backups. At 200 Mb speeds which is all I can get now in their current signal strength to my house the systems slow down and start buffering on us and that’s unacceptable. VZ 400Mb service on 5G which I can get at the new place is $199. Starlink is cheaper/better and will be giving us Gb Service later this year. We can eat up as much as they give us. Besides my company pays for it 😎

That’s the Mini they are throwing in for me for free! I can’t wait to take it camping and still be able to work and make cellular calls when I want to and watch TV before I go to bed 20 miles away from civilization 😁

The difference is that I LOVE my job which, unlike yours, does not require me to be anywhere in particular. I can easily do my job from anywhere/anytime if my choosing as long as I’m “connected”. So Starlink is the best of all worlds.

That I can’t do. The stuff I work on, when decisions need to be made I need to make them now not tomorrow or when I get back to my desk. My freedom from an office depends on being electronically connected to “work”. That means two phones and an iPad anywhere I go or I’d be chained to a desk which I will never do.

My sister and BIL recently went with Starlink. They’ve been very happy with it so far. Of course, they switched from DSL to Starlink, so they got a massive upgrade.

I was a fortunate recipient of the effort to run fiber optic lines to rural areas a few years ago. They ran the line on the poles all the way down my road to my property and installed the drop and modem, no charge. Of course, then I pay the monthly service fees, which is now $100/month for 400mb service. Which is far more than I’ll ever need. But it’s nice to have. I set up a mesh network so I have Wi-Fi all over my property and in my shop. Solved the issue of getting no Wi-Fi or cell service while in my shop.

DSL to Starlink is like going from a horse and buggy to a Ferrari 🤣

I’ve had fiber in a few of my houses and nothing beats it for raw speed. But the “cable” companies have pretty much given up on upgrading their networks so AT&T is the only guys that still have a robust fiber deployment strategy, as misguided as that is. Hybrid 6G and Satellite networks will be making fiber to the home obsolete. And laser multiplexing technologies have made the fiber that’s already installed pretty much into infinite speed networks.

We use our phone company internet (SRT) and for 39.00 a month speed test just showed 337 download and 351 upload.
It is fiber optics brought in underground. They just put in a new modem last year, no charge.

That’s a great deal for that speed on fiber 👍. The last two companies I dealt with on wired fiber delivered to me refurbished modems that were past end of life with the manufacturer. Had to FIGHT with them, much to their puzzlement, to get current gen equipment.

You don't have decent / good wired service out there? Heck, our place in the mountains north of ATL gets 1 gig service for $75 / month.

Nope. Local cable company sucks hairy moose ass in service and is still selling absolute BS coax service and Flintstones level equipment.. I cut them off 2 years ago and you couldn’t pay me to deal with them ever again.

Besides the option of internet on the go in the middle of nowhere as part of my plan is WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY too appealing. My current job gives me VERY generous vacation time and personal leave and being able to extend that even more by working from remote locations is just way too tempting.
