Hornady ELD-X
Hornady ELD-X
Does anyone have experience with them, either in factory ammo or loading your own?
On paper they look pretty good

Re: Hornady ELD-X
I have no personal experience with them, but my dad had one loose it's core on an elk. If memory is correct the core was a banana shape, not a mushroom. It worked, but not how it should have. This is just one person's experience with one bullet that was recovered. It's enough that he will never use them again and I tend to want to stay away from them after my experience with SST bullets on game, and his experience with the ELD-X. This may have just been the anomaly that seems to happen with every bullet though.
I tried the 103gr in my .243, but they do not stabilize with a 1:10 twist. Three rounds with a 8-10" pattern was enough for me to stop wasting my time.

Re: Hornady ELD-X
I use the 143gr ELD-X bullet in the 6.5 CM and my short .260 Remington on deer and have been very pleased with them so far. When I wasn’t getting exits or blood with the 130gr ELD-Match bullet (even though the deer would only run 30-40 yards after hit, I tried the X version and am getting exits.
I like them in that narrow test bed.

Re: Hornady ELD-X
Even shot a yote with the CM and of course, he dropped. Not much of a test, though.

I tend to be very skeptical when folks claim bullet failure. Especially these days. Data helps with that skepticism.

Re: Hornady ELD-X
I’m not skeptical till it’s used as an excuse for losing an animal. I’ve heard a lot of “bullet failure” when it’s nothing more than slob hunting.Zee wrote: ↑Sun Jul 30, 2023 2:46 amWe need more data on your dads shot.mitdr774 wrote: ↑Sat Jul 29, 2023 9:17 pm I have no personal experience with them, but my dad had one loose it's core on an elk. But since said critter was recovered….

Re: Hornady ELD-X
I havent used them. Only the Hday SST. Never again. Too splody. Fine if you make the perfect-ish shot. Through a shoulder is bad juju. Ive switched to Sierra Game Kings. Plain jane lead nose. Was going to try the fancy version of the SGK with the plastic tip, but they were out when I went to buy them. They wont offer me any advantage however, at the distance Im shooting.
As far as hunting bullets go, unless its a very specific application Im gonna stick with plain Jane bullets.
This has nothing to do with the topic. But thats how we roll here.

Re: Hornady ELD-X
If memory is correct it was a .300 WM with I believe a 200gr ELD-X. I dont recall the exact distance but I know it was under 200 yards. Maybe slight downward angle. All I know for sure is what I saw that was recovered from the animal. Sure it worked, but it didnt work as advertised. It was enough to discourage me from really wanting to invest in load development in my own rifles.
SSTs are too "slpody" for me as well. I wont hunt with them again if I can avoid it. I will probably stick with the InterLock for must hunting use. I know how they have performed for me in the past.
Bullets can and do fail to perform for who knows what reason. It happens across all manufactures. Maybe his was the anomaly, or maybe its a design flaw that just isnt really noticed by most due to a pass through? If the bullet had exited and nobody bothered to look for the jacket it probably would have never been noticed. I only have a couple recovered bullets, and both were just under the hide on the far side. One is a 250 gr .358 InterLock and the other is a 500gr .458 predecessor to the DGX name. Other than those, I have no idea about what has happened to the majority of the jacket and core. I know the SSTs left small jacket fragments, but thats about all I know for sure on them.
