Glucose meters....

Post by jbp-ohio »

I got a $20 one from drug mart to start monitoring my blood (changed diet). I thought it was doing good until I had a reading of 190 after dinner. Poked another finger and it was 130.

Which ones are accurate?

Either one means go see the doctor buddy. Anything over 100 is no bueno.

Blood glucose is a critical value, if it’s concerning enough to monitor then it’s best to buy a quality monitor.
You may need more than diet to initially get it under control. Best to start with your MD.

Been to the Dr. On medication now for less than a week. Radically changed my diet to get off of it the soonest.

Google free glucose monitors. Most the high end ones are free if you have a diabetes diagnosis. Go directly to the company site and then get a prescription for the strips from you doctor.

Lifel long type 1 here. I currently have a CGM that's implanted under my skin but have used pretty much every brand glucose meter. I've yet to see one that didn't match calibration (finger poke style.) Sounds like you might be type 2 and your pancreas is doing it's thing, but a little late.

Brother, if my blood sugar is under 100 I'm heading towards trouble in the form of hypoglycemia....I'm cliosely monitored by my Doc, I'm on meds and I run 130 to 150 most days with an A1C of 7...In the end it varies wildly from person to to person...

You get what you pay for...my old glucometer did the same thing ...one finger always registered higher than the other...so I split the difference and went with that and it was pretty spot on...I talked to my Doc about it and she was puzzled...but she wrote me a prescription for a glucometer since I was testing multiple times a day
..I ended up with an Accu-Check and the problem went away...

A word about dealing with this stuff...Not sayng it will work for you bur thid is what works for me to keep it under control.. Besides bring religious about taking my meds, I do intermittent fasting....I eat a fairly low carb diet, but don't get stupid about it...then I eat nothing after 8 pm until 10am or later....then before breakfast...check your blood sugar....and eat a few small meals throughout the day...

When I posted that I didn't know he was already diagnosed. I'm on meds and I RUN under 100 most of the time with an AIC of 6.0 nowadays. Getting down from 230 to 185 did the trick for me. I don't do the DAILY finger prick anymore. I just get an AIC test every 6 months from the doctor and he nods his head and off I go.

YEP...Weight loss is definitely a major deal in the process...I'm at a place where I don't need to test daily either but since the CVA I've turned into something of a control freak about monitoring my vitals...

My Doc and my CGM are both happy with anything under 180mg/dl

Already down 10#. Haven't had a pop (or bread or pasta) since last Sunday.

I was getting 130's two hours after dinner for a couple days. Why the 190 was out of place. I want the Libre that goes on your arm (just for a couple months) but will have to pay out of pocket.
