I actually lived in New Orleans for a few years and get back there rather frequently. I LOVE Mardi Gras but the real party for the bucket list is New Years Eve on Bourbon Street. It is just SOMETHING ELSE!!!!!

I have not been to New Orleans Mardi Gras but have been there for New Year’s Eve. That was years ago, it did not disappoint

Never done Mardi Gras but yes, NYE on Bourbon St. (or just a block or two off of it, a little farther than the tourists go) is phenomenal.

The year I went, shortly before midnight my group was outside of a jazz club and saw a HUGE group of people walking down the street following someone who had a boombox in a baby stroller playing jazz tunes. Naturally we followed them without giving it much thought, and the group ended up at the water just in time for the fireworks. Who said to never follow strangers??

I was living in NOLA with my then fiancé who insisted she wanted a Hurricane right before the stroke of midnight. I walked into the nearest bar, ordered and was walking out with both hands full when someone yelled "Happy New Year!" By the time I made it outside I looked and felt like I was doing a "walk of shame"

I could be with all 5-6 people I really like, and I’d still hate it. The ratio of likable to unlikable people would be waaaay off.

As I get older I have gotten more adept at ignoring unlikeable people whether they be in a crowd or in a small group. I have ZERO energy to assign to them, they just get switched off and I dedicate 100% of my time and energy to the ones I actually like and to having a good time wherever I am. Basically they just become background noise, like the leftover chatter of the Bing Bang that I can't really hear.

There’s nothing I want to do that involves crowds. Large venue concerts, sporting events (save for a few motor sports type events) the “bar scene”, loud restaurants, naw. I’m skilled at tuning people out, ignoring people by pretending not to hear them, and avoiding social interaction. (ask my wife) Theres very few large events that I’d consider attending, and those are very specific to my interests, and I know I’d be surrounded by those with similar interests. SHOT Show would be one, just to say I’d been. IMTS which is a machining trade show that’s held in Chicago bi-annually. I’d go to that because that would tickle my ‘tism and I’d get to meet folks in person who I’ve met on the interwebs.

A large group of party goers dancing and carrying on? Nope. I’d prefer to be up to my nuts in mud dragging pigs through a field and then watching as a buddy skins them in his underwear.

Casual observers reading this forum who are not familiar with this place or its inmates may think the above sentence is hyperbole, made up for the sake of discussion.
But it ain’t.

Part of my family is from NOLA, a couple of cousins are high up in a couple of the bigger Krewes, etc, etc. No interest in Mardi Gras, or any other drunken celebrations. Bourton street is nice enough during the day, but you wouldn't catch me dead there by nite or anytime during Mardi-Gras. I will recommend one of the VooDoo tours put on by "Bloody Mary". I had a very interesting chat with a VooDoo priestess about "Robert the Doll" in Key West. She said, "Oh THAT thing? Its creepy!" - Like I told my wife later, when a VooDoo priestess says something is creepy, its friggin' CREEPY - you can take THAT to the bank!
