Ed Brown 1911 magazines

A while back I posted about a 1911 magazine I got with a manufacturing flaw.

Follow up: I've been running Ed Brown 8 round magazines since then, and am quite satisfied.

I started my 8 round mag journey running Chip McCormick Classic 8 round mags. I wound up disappointed because I found them to be sensitive to grit and debris, magazine springs wore out quicker than USGI patterns mags from Springfield and Metalform, and I had two followers break. That last may have been a fluke or operator error, but the first two I didn't care for. I never ran Wilson magazines because I don't want to pay twice as much for one round capacity, and I have a mental block against plastic followers if I can get metal.

The Ed Brown magazines have a longer tube so they don't need a trick follower, metal followers with the Browning-spec dimple, the ability to number each mag for accounting purposes, and good reviews. I've had no issues running ball, LSWC, and a limited selection of HP ammo. The magazine base pad is plastic, which I'm not enthused about, and mags do hang below the base of the frame if you don't have a magwell.

On the whole, I like them and will get more. Prices are pretty good if you're patient and shop around, and Ed Brown offers a mag exchange program I didn't know about when I got pissed and scrapped some of my Chip McCormick mags.

Running good mags is essential. I too have had my issues with chip McCormick mags, won’t use em’ won’t every carry with em’. I’m partial to Wilson’s for no other reason that I’ve used the scrap out of them…..

One thing I forgot to mention is the follower has a patent number on it. Patent number corresponds with a Checkmate patent. Not saying anything, but these look a LOT like Checkmate magazines, which I hear good things about.

In a standard magazine I like Metalform or Springfield.

I’m so thankful that Glock mags just work like they are supposed to. I remember the days of fretting over which 1911 mag would work and which wouldn’t.
Thank God for Glock.
