This morning I and our 18lb part Jack Russell mix were on our morning run.
A healthy looking coyote ran past us from behind. Henry was going wild on the long lead the coyote stopped pivoted facing us inside 5o ft. Ears back, teeth showing, tail straight back. I grabbed Henry. This coyote is fearless and moving toward us.
I yelled at him hes still coming. Finally i ran toward him and he backed off but was paralleling us for a good quarter mile.
These urban coyotes are really getting aggressive. This one was alone but ive seen groups of 3 to 5 recently but at longer distances. Soon one of these encounters is not going to end well

Re: Wicked close coyote encounter
When we had the ranch my wife did not want me to take the coyotes out. She felt that they were just another form of wildlife for us to care for. Over time the damned things got bolder and bolder and during one particular hard winter one of them squared off to me just behind our barn. When they forget humans are lethal to them we just become another impediment to their next meal.
Anyway, his snarling toothy show ended when I put a .357 slug into the dirt between his legs and he expediently took off. Roll forward a few weeks later and a coyote took out Red, her favorite rooster, who died valiantly defending his free range hens we kept. Then the cuffs came off and she said kill them all. Having a bunch of piles of deer innards around all year long (landowner and nuisance permits) made it easy for me to clean out my territory.
I hate the damn things, they are cowards and the way they kill is terrible. If you've ever heard a fawn bleating in panic and pain as a coyote tears into it's belly while it's still alive you will strongly consider them just targets.
