Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
I picked this up to flip.
Apparently these are gold
Big Al may have known not sure what happened with him ?
I don't see how it would attach
It seems orientated wrong.
With windage seems to be a #38 varient.
Anything I look up seems wrong
Help
Some pictures maybe it's just brain cramp

Yep, Al was a great guy and a wealth of knowledge

Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
When I was looking for a peep sight for one of the wifes inherited lever guns I picked up one that looked like that but it was a Williams sight. I gave it away as wife wanted to keep it like her Grandfather had it.
Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
You only have half a sight.
All you have there is what's called the slide assembly. The dovetail with the deer logo and elevations marks on it inserts into the base which is bolted to the rifle's receiver. The base will contain a push-button quick-release that engages on the threaded elevation stalk. This allows you to separate the slide for transport, cleaning etc... The base will have an adjustable pointer that you can set on the "zero" mark once you get your load dialed in which gives you a quick return-to-zero ability when re-installing.
Depending on the model, some of them will attach to the receiver's right side - - notably the Lyman 48's which are for the Mauser-based actions where the left side of the receiver is occupied by the ejector/bolt-stop assembly.
Odds are, that slide will fit into the base for a wide variety of right-side Lyman models.

As Paul Harvey would have said “the rest of the story”
A Lyman 48 03a3. You need the base that are fairly common on eBay.

Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
I can help there, what do you need pics of?
Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
Obviously not the same sight but probably comparable in form and function.
Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
JMHO,it's more than likely a Lyman 48 for a Springfield like Big Slug said. It doesn't look like any Lyman21's Ive see on the net. That said you got a good deal. Cool tabbit hole to climb into!

Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
I found this in a few of the searches
It's half of an odd duck
It's definitely marked as a 21 C
The 38 varient has windage
Mounted on the right hand side was only the remington model
Lyman No.21 - patented June 25, 1895, and originally intended for the Winchester Model 1895. Later it was adapted for use on Winchester Models: 1886, 1892, 1894, 53, 55, 64, and 65; Marlin Models 1893 and 1895.
Lyman No.38 - patented July 25, 1899. Originally adapted to the same models as the No.21, with the addition of the Remington Models 14 and 141.
Production for both ended in 1943, as well as for the No.41
He had a few other oddball ones.
One was for an m1

Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
That’s a Lyman 48, regardless of markings or tag.
Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
Sorry this is a Lyman 21 sight. This is an expensive sight designed for the Winchester 1895 original then adapted….. what you have is as our esteemed colleague said, Lyman 48.

Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
Yup that a climbing lyman like most mounted on the left side originally developed for lever actions.
Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
Right side mounted is a Remington, Mauser, Winchester Springfield bolt gun sight

Re: Lyman 21 C ......I can't figure it out
I'm no expert on the things, but I've stayed in their Holiday Inn Express.
There are basic sub-categories. The 48 was, as I said, a right-side-of-receiver series for Mauser-family rifles. You'd have a letter suffix after that number 48 to denote which particular branch of the family it would fit on.
The slides were probably SOMEWHAT interchangeable, and I'm guessing number on that might be part of some code structure to determine what bases it would be useful on. You need enough height to properly interact with the receiver diameter and front sight height, but you also need correct width to put the windage mechanism more or less centered on the bore. I had to shim model 57 out from the left side of a Mossberg 144 .22. Either the base itself fit the receiver contour but didn't offset outward far enough or the windage track of the slide didn't go far enough to the left.
20 years ago, Gary Fellers in Ft. Worth would have been the guy to contact to run it down. My guess is he has probably shuffled off the mortal coil.

Contact Lyman. Even though they aren’t what they were when that was made, maybe they know.

Thanks guys
I've been checking stuff out.
I did try it in my mauser one and it went in snuggly.
The mauser one is marked 058
Bigslug I came across where it looks like he's still around
