Long range in work

Post by Varmintmist »

FINALLY after a lot of side lining "Ulla" my long range rifle is coming together. Still need some info from the gunsmith to get the stock ordered but most of the parts are here or at his shop.
28" (subject to be 30) hawk hill heavy Palma bbl (never heard of them but this guy builds rifles for current record holders soooo I am rolling with his knowledge)
rem 700 adl LA
Timney 2 stage 1/1.5 lb trigger. Kind of wanted Jewell but they are between suppliers. I think it will be fine.
Nightforce 5-22x50 (been at gunsmith so long I am not braining the exact designation.. NXS??)
Mcmillian A1-3 with a clamp cheek peice, blind mag, spacer system (LOP issue, when I go to the zoo the orangutans look at me and go "Bro"), 3 studs and a 1/2 decelerator pad.

6.5x55 Mauser, now called 6.5 Swede
Got dies, bullets, primers, brass and powder on the way. Gunsmith emailed me 2 days ago and said he has started on it. Once the threads are cut and I get some dimensions off of him, the nice lady at Mcmillian has the rest of the info and that will begin.

Just got off the phone with Lynne from McMillian. Should be getting a conformation email soon. So far, this has been a pleasant interaction. Not one person I talked to or corresponded with was not knowledgeable or helpful. So as to recommending, at this point 5 star.
From their website, shipping is 3-6 mo. Then it will go to the gunsmith to be final fitted (if need be) and glass bedded. With a little luck I will shoot it in a 600yd mid range this fall.

I like the setup. Iin some ways, it's quite close to my F-TR Match rifle, which is in .308 Win.
I started with a Timney, but after 10 years and 10s of thousands of rounds, it started doing things. I also discovered that where I had it as a 1.5 oz trigger at the beginning, it had increased to over 6 ounces. I replaced it earlier this year with a Bix N Andy set at 1 OZ.

My barrels are Krieger heavy Palma. I have played between 30 to 34 inches and now back down to 30. My last pair of barrels came in a few months ago after a 14 month wait. I'm 2400 rounds into the current one so still good to finish the season and get the new ones chambered in the fall.

My action is a Kelbly Stolle Panda, short action, right bolt, right port, no ejector.

The stock is a Precision Rifle and Tools design, the Lowboy. They don't sell the stock anymore, just complete rifles.

The riflescope is currently a March-X 10-60X56 HM, soon to be replaced with a March-X 8-80X56 HM WA.

The riflescope you mentioned is a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X50. I look forward to some pictures of your finished rifle and the attendant field report.

I forgot to mention that I have installed a tuner on my current barrel. It helped me tune the current load to a fine edge.

The tuner comes into play after you have done load development, and you are looking for that last bit of precision. The tuning process is interesting, and I selected the tuner setting that produced the smallest of the 7 three-shot groups, which measure in the 2s at 100 yards.

Some thoughts on the Palma contour: I really like that contour as I find it elegant and a good use of metal when dealing with weight restrictions. The barrel is 1.25 inch thick for 2.5 inches then it reduced down to 1 inch at the 5-inch mark. From that point on, the thickness slowly goes down to .900 inch at the muzzle. I feel it makes for a nicely balanced yet stiff barrel.

The plan is sling 600-1000yds. To much scope with the bone and leather rest I would think could be a problem quick. In availability in triggers I know, the 1/1.5 Timney was what was available. As I do this I figure things will change but it should hold me for a bit.
I have noodeled this for a while and I think the setup is hard to go wrong with. I tried to not cut corners so starting with "good" should make it easier in the long run.
Picked up more points in service rifle, so I am still going to focus on that. However Reade runs a "Rifleman's weekend" and there is talk of an xtc that is service rifle to 600, then add 1K with what ya brung for a 1000 point match. I plan on getting my distinguished, then pursue other shooting seriously.

I like it, I think you have a solid plan. I completely agree with the scope on bone and leather. I watch some of the guys with any/any rifles doing great with 20-25X riflescope.

I wish you all the luck and keep us updated.
