Leupold Scope went belly up

Post by 12th Man »

Went out to the range yesterday to get a couple of rifles sighted in and verify the zero's on a couple more. I have a new .300 BO upper for my AR. I took the previous Leupold VX 7 2X7 scope off the old upper and mounted it right to the new upper. I've had this scope for at least six or seven years, never an issue with it. Checked to make sure everything was tight. My first shot hit paper at 100 yards, six inches high and 3" left. I made necessary adjustments and shot again. Didn't hit paper! What on earth! Since the scope has a zero stop, there's no way I could go down and in the wrong direction. I put everything back to zero and shot again. Nothing! I moved to 50 yards. I hit the target above mine and now I'm 5" right. I took another shot and nothing on any of the targets. I move to 25 yards, take the bolt carrier out, look down the barrel and adjust the crosshairs so I should at least hit paper. Yep, I hit paper on next shot, low and left. I shoot another shot to verify. Nothing! I remove the bolt carrier, look down the barrel to center it on the target, crosshairs are no where near the target.

I stop the process, take the scope out the rings, verify the mounts are tight which they had to be. Remount the scope. I center it up again looking down the barrel at 25 yards. Shoot and I hit paper, low and left. Shoot another shot and nothing. I will say I shot a box and half of shells trying different things during this process. Went into the house, went on line and within minutes I had an RMA number from Leupold. Scope goes back today. I wonder what the turn around time will be on getting it repaired or replaced.

Overall great day shooting, though the last hour was a bit frustrating!

It was 2-3 weeks last time I had to send one back, that was 10 yrs ago though.

I do not recall how long it took for either time I had to send the same scope in. Fogged two deer seasons in a row, and has not been mounted on a rifle since it's second repair. I don't plan on letting it ruin a third season.

Had to use their warranty service twice including one time when I negligently broke one of my scopes and told them I did it. New ones sent out within days of sending broken one, zero hassles or questions asked.

That sure would be nice if it's a quick turn-around. I remember a few years back I bought an ATN X-Sight 4K day/night scope. I used it one season for hunting hogs at night, as I recall it worked well. I charge the battery last night, updated the firmware this morning, set the date and time, changed the reticle. I was able to get it to sync to my iPhone for remote viewing. I'm gonna mount it on the .300 BO on Saturday and give it a try. It should be fun for hogs!
