The 20 Practical

I was "done" with BL-C (2) before I ever got my first "can"

Re: The 20 Practical
Eh, I was just funnin but that is a fantastic price for a barrel from a well named company. Very cool project too. I always wondered why the 204 ruger wasn't accomplished using the same principle with 223 brass instead.Jay wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 4:31 pmThis is my first time using it. Didn’t even realize I had a pound of it and don’t remember where it came from. I’m going to keep playing with it. If it gets me the velocity and accuracy I’m looking for, I can put up with dirty. Although I didn’t notice it being unusually dirty yesterday. But I also wasn’t shooting it suppressed. No need putting a bunch or rounds through the can for no reason until I get closer to finishing load work and zeroing.
Re: The 20 Practical
That cartridge has my interest. I have plenty of 100gr 6mm bullets (Yes I know, they are very heavy for that cartridge) and Im still debating whats going to happen to the barrel on my .243 given its drop off with the 85gr InterBond. Somewhere I have a reamer, head space gauges, and a die set.

Re: The 20 Practical
We’ll have Keith’s 6mm ARC done this week and start load testing. Mine will be a bit still. That is the one to run heavier bullets out of. The 6x45 is more of a 75-85 grain cartridge. And even then it’s a bit slow. Still a neat cartridge. I love it.

Re: The 20 Practical
I suggest getting on McGowans website and spec’ing out a barrel… or talk to JSD… if you have the stuff to chamber one, you’re a step ahead. You can’t buy a ready made barrel in 6x45. Custom only. It is a neat cartridge.mitdr774 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 17, 2023 10:04 pmThat cartridge has my interest. I’m covering a range in AR platforms. From 204, to 224, to 6mm, 308 and 45 cal. I’m done for a while. I do like the 6x45 though.
Re: The 20 Practical
Case against 6mm ARC would be I have a reamer for 6x45 (it is questionable since it is a PTG reamer though), and I have plenty of .223 brass that can be converted. 6mm ARC brass is hit and miss to find, im not giving up my 6.5 Grendel brass to convert, and converting 7.62x39 brass results in a very reduced brass life when converted to 6.5 Grendel supposedly. I have dies for both cartridges already, as well as 6 Creedmoor
I have a 6mm Lilja barrel at home that will either become a 6x45, 6ARC, .243, 6CM, or 6mm-06. Original plan was a 6x45 though. I was talking to JSD about a 6.5-06 rebarrel job, but he is very a busy man and that project is on hold for now.

Re: The 20 Practical
What’s the twist rate on your Lilja? If it’s on the slower side, 6x45 would make sense. Faster, 6 ARC. I think the main thing there being the case lengths. 6ARC can take longer bullets and still have powder capacity. 6x45 loses a lot of powder capacity with bullets that long.mitdr774 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 18, 2023 10:19 am Case against 6mm ARC would be I have a reamer for 6x45 (it is questionable since it is a PTG reamer though), and I have plenty of .223 brass that can be converted. 6mm ARC brass is hit and miss to find, im not giving up my 6.5 Grendel brass to convert, and converting 7.62x39 brass results in a very reduced brass life when converted to 6.5 Grendel supposedly. My honest opinion, 6x45 and 6 ARC are more practical in ARs. They’re specifically for AR mag length. It only makes sense to me to build a really short action (mini action) bolt gun with those cartridges. Which is where my next project is going. Short bolt throw, light, etc.. Otherwise, as far as ballistics, the 243 and bigger cartridges make more sense, at the expense of a little more recoil. Just my opinion and a little of what steered me in the direction I’m going with my bolt gun build.
I do see your point on the 6x45. Having brass, a barrel and a reamer goes a long ways toward a build.
Re: The 20 Practical
I've enjoyed watching the progress. Gotta five a nod to Scooter for the inspiration on this one.

Re: The 20 Practical
This gave me a stupid idea. I love my M70 in 225 winchester. That would be interesting to put into an AR platform.
Re: The 20 Practical
The 225 win seems a bit too long and is a rimmed case with a pretty big rim diameter. Not sure how that would work in an AR. 22 Nosler would probably be pretty close in terms of ballistics and fit the AR mags and bolt. There’s also the 22 Grendel wildcat, which could probably be loaded much the same as I’m doing with the 20P.

Re: The 20 Practical
It would have to be done in an AR10 with a reamer made to cut a chamber where the cartridge would headspace off of the shoulder. The only thing that would maybe be problematic would be the case rim and I'm not sure that it would be a big deal except for being careful to not trap cases when loading a mag. I know there's better options but I enjoy doing weird isht
Re: The 20 Practical
Another test session with the 20. Tried a different powder. Great accuracy, way too slow. BLC2 is looking like the way to go, but I’m at 3600 and only about 1/2 grain more to go before expected pressure issues. I’ll try that. At this point, it’s a 1/2” gun, just need that accuracy node that has speed and precision. Time will tell.
.28” group, 100 yards, 20-30 mph wind from 10-11 o’clock. Too slow…

Midtr, I just saw your PM. I’m winding down for the night. Get back with you on your PM in the morning. Sorry bud. Didn’t see it till now.

Hey, I found out McGowan is pretty reasonable on pricing and at least this barrel is on track to be a good shooter.
And, apparently the cartridge is capable of 4200 fps out of a 24” bolt gun. Find you a mini action, get it barreled for 20 Practical and drop it in MDT’s inexpensive Oryx chassis.. Once you get there, I’ll get you a list of all the die stuff you’ll need to load it.

Re: The 20 Practical
I honestly like this cartridge in the AR platform for what I plan to use it for. If I take it coyote hunting and have multiple yotes to shoot at or need to make a follow up shot, it’s ready to go. Just gotta pull the trigger again.

Re: The 20 Practical
I have 2 204 rugers.
I use h335 in them.
By what I've seen with 20's top accuracy is at the extreme top end

Re: The 20 Practical
H335 and 4198 seem to be the powders to go with for this. Only problem is, I have neither of those powders. Local Cabelas didn’t have any the other day. I’ll keep my eyes open for some.
I do have IMR4198. But load data seems to indicate it’s not quite the same as the H version.
