LGS

Post by Centermass »

I think you can determine the quality of a LGS by the amount of graybeards hanging around chewing the fat

It can go either way.
It may very well be “you need a 1911, boy! In .45. Know why it was made in .45? Cause they didn’t make a .46! TWO WORLD WARS ! Just the wind of the bullet whizzing past your arm will rip it clean off “

Yeah, the greybeard LGS near me is a pink .38 sbub for the ladies, .380 for the guys, kind of shop. They also recommend downloading a mag by 10% capacity to save the springs, cowboys carried .45 Colts because you could get a lever action and revolver to chamber it, and the CIA and Mossad use .22s, so they are good enough for self defense.

They also charge MSRP and don't negotiate on price.

I got yelled at by a sales guy there when he tried to sell me a Roger LCP in .380 and I said I would rather carry a single stack 9mm for better ballistics and ergonomica.

I don’t care for most stores when there are people inside. I’m also an informed buyer. I thankfully don’t need to rely upon LGS “knowledge”.
I know what I want before I go in, or, I’m picking up something I’ve ordered online.

This.
Though, I like hanging at my LGS just to hang out. We are all friends.

Too many sales people don't understand that it's more important to offer assistance without opinion than the other way around.

And too many consumers think the guy at the gun counter knows what he is talking about when regrettably that's often not the case.

The counter person should be knowledgeable.

I also don't like the local LGSs because of the conspiratorial and downright wrong crap they try to peddle. Last good gem was that their Winchester White Box or its equivalent was twice as expensive as Walmart's because the LGS stuff actually went through quality control and wouldn't blow your gun up like the Walmart stuff.

I heard one tell the customer in front of me that the post in a Hydra-Shok was steel, so it could defeat body armor.
After that customer left and it was my turn, I asked the guy when they changed it to steel, and when the federal law banning AP handgun ammo was repealed. He told me it had always been steel, and it was grandfathered in

I dunno. I enjoy hearing the old timers’ stories.

I know half the time, half of it poop.. but, I figure if you lived through a war or two, and are still out and about, someone outta listen to what you have to say.

Luckily El Paso has half a dozen or so LGS. Lets me kinda vet the one I want to do business with.

I used to go to a really great LGS/outdoors shop. But, the fellow who ran it retired.

Lately the ones I have been going to are owned/ran by younger guys. They actually seem to know what they are about and everything isnt high speed low drag impersonation. There are AR's sitting next to Krags and Rem 700's. Watched them talk to a prospective women buyer about a CC and while they didnt push one they liked, they explained the recoil of the small and the harder to conceal of the large and suggested that she consider the way she was going to carry. She walked out to think it over. Job well done IMHO.

LGSs are great places for many things. Getting good useful knowledge about firearms is seldom one of those things.

I’ve noticed the older the crowd hanging around, the more political bull poop gets spread. It’s like all the Fox News anchors have gathered at the LGS for a remote broadcast.

I've read about the people that claim a shotgun doesn't need to be aimed because it'll hit whatever you have it pointed towards, but never experienced hearing someone actually say it to another person until I worked at the last place I was gunsmithing for. The manager, who has 2 brain cells that are constantly duking it out for the top spot said that to a husband and wife looking for a good home defense firearm. I've met alot of people involved with guns that aren't necessarily "gun people."

The LGS by me is closing its door. I have know the owner since I was a little kid. I was planning on dropping some things off to consignment sell there, but that wont happen now. While the political BS level was up there, I have come to expect that in a gun shop environment. I did also watch the guys behind the counter attempt to steer people away from bad decisions. Sometimes with success, sometimes without success. I know a lot of people complained about the attitudes of the employees there, but they didnt tolerate unsafe practices or shenanigans. A lot of complaints also pertained to people being upset that they couldnt use ammunition loaded with steel cored or jacketed bullets on the indoor range. People would still try to sneak it in and then get pissed when told to stop it the first time and thrown out the second time they were caught using it.

I guess I am lucky that I like my LGS. It is a one man shop and his prices are good. He is very knowledgeable about how guns work and their features. He does a pretty good job of talking to a new gun owner and steering them in the right direction but if you know what you are looking for he will sell it to you, he sells quite a few Taraus and those Florida made pistols because people like the price. He doesn't get many used guns but he prices them right if he does. I would much rather go there than a chain store.

I’m fond of the El Paso Gun Collector also, it’s on north Mesa.
There FFL service is on the high side, but every time I’ve been in there, I’ve them have good patience with a new buyer.
The dude that handles form 4 stuff is insanely patient and helpful.
