Talk me out of a Steyr rifle

Post by jkp »

So, in the interest of downsizing I am looking at this random rifle that popped up on the PSA deal of the day.

https://palmettostatearmory.com/steyr-p ... m_content=

https://steyr-arms.us/steyr-pro-hunter-iii/

I don't have a .308 Win bolt action (I know, I know...) so I'm thinking this might be a good solution to that problem. Already have all of the loading stuff for my AR-10t so it would be an easy add to the collection. My primary use would be killing paper.

Price seems right. Any experience with these rifles or others I should consider at that price point?

Rather than talk about what you asked about, n typical forum procedure I’ll toss out another option.

New and improved Ruger American.

I know nothing of either. Other than the Ruger uses common magazines.

Thanks. I've been looking at that new Ruger as well. Cheaper when in stock and has a few more features. I wonder if the stock still sucks on the Ruger?

It’s….less ugly than the original American???

Can’t speak to function.

Meh. I want results not marketing wank from a free hunt. But there were at least a few nuggets of info, like this one:

“ Ruger has improved the finish on the bolt action for smoother manipulation.”

I can only hope that my phone call with two of the quality control engineer type folks helped that along. It was something along the lines of “I can make a smoother finish with a clapped out craftsman lathe in my garage. “

(That was after a rifle got shipped without going through the tumbler leaving it with razor sharp burs. I was the lucky recipient. )

Never owned one but have fired a couple over the years. One of the first gen Steyr Scouts and a first gen pro hunter. Both shot exceptionally well in my opinion and were rock solid platforms. The ruger American has never struck me as such but, I have never fired one ether. If price points are similar, I personally would choose the Steyr over the Ruger without hesitation.

I had a Steyr at the shoe store back in the day. Very accurate rifle. Problem I had was the slow (12T) twist rate and the odd muzzle thread.

I have a Gen 1 Ruger in .223 Rem and love it. I’m eyeing the Gen 2 rifle but it’s not chambered in anything I need.

Buy it! I’ve owned and currently own several Steyr guns and all are exceptional high quality guns. That price is a steal! Wish I needed another hunting rifle.

Wasn’t trying to. Just letting you know. I still think they look cool and I like the panache. Those two issues are just a quirk of mine. If they are for you, pass. If not, you do you. 👍🏻👍🏻

Understood. First thing I'd do is mount a brake so that would limit options. And I'd like a 1:10 twist.

Yeah 1/2-20 threads? Do their engineers parents have any children that lived?

If your primary intent is killing paper, maybe a carry-weight sporting rifle isn't the ideal option.
WWJMBD?

Agreed. I've got chassis rifles, quite a few heavy varmint style rifles, etc. Just looking to fill the .308 Win void and probably won't do it with another chassis rifle. Bergara HMR is also under consideration.

I sent Steyr an email to confirm with the hope that maybe they made some changes with the Gen III rifle. Nope, their response:

"The twist rate for the Steyr Pro Hunter III chambered in .308 Winchester is 1 in 12 inches. The thread pitch for the muzzle is ½ x 20."

Also, it's pronounced "stare" not "stire." Kind of like Porsche, I've been saying it wrong!

And the slow twist doesn’t matter unless you are loading heavy 308 bullets.

I don’t load heavy bullets in my .308s and I still prefer an 8T!
