I believe he said he’s looking at going with around a 20” barrel. The benefit you get with going with the Encore action is, you can load to the higher bolt gun pressure. And the chamber is essentially 6” further back than a bolt gun. Which makes the OAL of the rifle shorter. Shorter, handier, lighter. Suppressor friendly. Should make for a pretty handy tote around gun.
I get his thing with not wanting to go bolt gun. It loses its appeal in a regular length short action. You can just go 243 if that’s the case. And starting over with a new action, like the Howa, means starting with a new footprint, new chassis. More $
I went with the Howa rather than a gas gun specifically for the better ballistics. Essentially having very close to 243 performance out of a true 223 length action, at higher pressure than a gas gun. And I don’t fling my brass into the next county.
I don’t consider the 6ARC a neutered 243. In a gas gun, yes. Looking at book load data, bolt gun loads using 105 grain bullets pick up 300 fps over gas gun loads at max. 2850 fps is what Hornady data says. I have yet to test this. But that’s a lot of speed left on the table.
Other benefits, 6ARC gets that performance using less powder. Less recoil than an 243. Which could be nice in the Encore platform. And, it uses small rifle primers, not large. Large rifle primers have still been more difficult to find, for me. Zee gets free brass. Already has bullets for the cartridge. So, he’s looking at a few hundred for a barrel, then use components he already has on the shelf. Why not?![]()
Of course you’re siding with him. Pretty convenient that he’s gonna host you for dove hunting next week.Zee wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 2:17 pmFinally!!!! A smart one!!Jay wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 1:40 pm Having had the conversation with Zee, looking at load data and BSing, I support his idea.

Classic case of hoes before bros.
I have a healthy supply of 100gr InterLock bullets and that was my plan if I put together a 6 ARC. Hornady has the .243 topping out at 3000 fps with that bullet, but the far weaker and pointless 6 ARC only tops out at a pathetic 2900 fps in a bolt gun....
