I will end up with optics on all carry guns. Wife shot the Nevada CCW qualification with my Glock 48 after not shooting at all for quite a while and having NEVER shot a gun with optics. The only thing the RO could say was DAMM! When we rolled her target back to the table at the indoor range. Her smile was priceless.

Excerpt from Bigslug’s rant. I so agree!

“Crutches - we all use 'em. Some of us are just less in denial about the fact that they are indeed crutches, being comfortable in our physical pathetic-ness and willing to call them what they are.

The screws, loc-tite, batteries, glass, and gears associated with red dots are a pacemaker for the frail human eye. No shame in shooting with one, but call it what it is.”

I have a Holosun coming for my 48. I am modernizing my carry setup. I am semi retiring th 19 an 26 and moving to the slimlines while adding optics. I am very happy with how the 48 carries compared to the 19. I have carried the same 19 for nearly 21 years.

I finally got to shoot my P365 with the Holosun 507 that JSD milled the slide and mounted. I previously said the red dot makes you a little better. CPJ said i was wrong, that it could make you a lot better. Well CPJ was right. It has been raining since i got back from Texas, so I went to the indoor range. The digital thing said I was at 9 yards. This is my first 10 leaning against the stall. and CPJ was right it makes you a lot better.

It’s just a crutch.

If you’d spend hundred of hours shooting thousands of rounds you wouldn’t need that crutch. Do better!

Easier to be accurate. You still have to have solid fundamentals. In some case, more so. But, it’s easier to shoot accurately.

In 78% of shootings, you won't have time to aim.

That's what the pot-bellied greybeard wearing khaki shorts, suspenders, New Balance 605s, and an NRA cap said at the local gun shop.

Anyone know of a cheap shot timer? (Or willing to loan me one?)

I have 2 Dagger slides, one with a Holosun 407 on it and the other isn't cut for an optic. I can take both slides to the range (When I get to where I CAN go to the range) and set up 2 targets and shoot 1 with an optic and one with irons, using the same frame (trigger), ammo and barrel. So any difference would pretty much have to be optic vs irons

Edited to add: cheap is $50 or less

I got a free app on my iPhone. I’m sure there’s something similar for android.
Mines called “make ready”.

Not sure if it’s good or bad. But, it does what I need.

I shot my 48 with the Holosun 407 today. I put 50 rounds through it just zeroing and getting a feel for it. It held zero great and I believe it will be a great improvement.

My current observations

1 it is not magic. You still have to practice all the fundamentals to shoot well. Grip, sight picture, trigger prep, driving the gun, stable position, etc all app,y. A novice will still be a novice and shoot only slightly better without the fundamentals.

2 it did make me more accurate, and faster while shooting.

3 This is the one I believe I will need to work the most on. Presentation/target acquisition. I found myself looking for the dot and it has a narrow degree of deflection where it is visible in the sight. After messing around with drawing it some and practicing I found myself going back to basics. Draw, front sight press in and align rear sights, and there is my dot every time. It is not unlike watching someone with a laser that is not a shooter. They are always squinting down range, looking for the laser rather than lining up the sights, and there the laser is.

My conclusion thus far is that with more practice in , stick to the fundamentals, I will be just as fast to my first shot, and faster and more accurate with follow up shots.

It is a keeper and so far so good. I can not endorce the Holosun at this time as I have only put 50 rounds through it. It did perform well with those 50 rounds.

Take it as you will.

I can fix you. A midget shoe salesman fixed me. No ammo required!

Work “backwards”. Aim your gun on the target. Get the correct picture. Pull it back to your chest. Push it back out. Is the dot where it’s supposed be? If yes, squeeze the trigger, as your “reward.” Do it again. Dot NOT on target? NO SQUEEZE FOR YOU! Keep doing that till every time is perfect.

Now draw from your holster. Bring to your boobies, push to target. Dot on target? Squeeze. If not, you need to go back to pushing it from your chest, you’ve not trained your lizard brain.

Repeat till you get it. Practice daily.

The trick is, you’re training your noodle to know what perfect looks like. If it ain’t perfect “halfway” through the process (from chest to extended) it ain’t gonna be perfect adding in the draw.

It’s goofy working backwards, but it works.

Oh.
And don’t do it fast. If you can’t do it slow, you can’t do it fast. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast, blah blah blah.
