Ok so a very small disappointment. The grips are not original to the gun. The revolver was made in 1980 but when I removed the grips they have a 1988 date stamped on them.
The box, which is the original shows the gun came with T grips (Target). According to my limited knowledge and research they should have the “football” target grips like the ones on Bigslug’s gun. Not really a big deal since the grips fit the gun very well and they are in great shape, but now I want to find originals that will make the gun “correct”.

Hopefully junkcollector will see this and confirm that my research is correct before I start looking.

I just surfed the 66 options on GB. The impression I got is that the "football" cutout may have changed to your speedloader cut style with the later 66-1's.

This seems to be borne out with a look in my Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, which shows a "football" dated 1978 next to your speed loader cut style dated 1981.

My thought is that yours are probably correct for that gun in all but the date stamp. They're certainly more practical - mine make it somewhat challenging to clear even .38 brass.

The stamp bothers me. I’m slightly OCD when it comes to guns and even a slam issue that only I know about becomes a little scab to pick. I don’t know that I’ll do anything about it in the short term. We’ll see, but thanks for the info

Meh…. I’ll sleep on it for a while. Maybe I’ll go all out and get a model correct 2.5” barrel, custom grips and have Justsomedude do a full polish job (in and out) and install the snub barrel making it a non-catalog square butt 2.5” gun

And yes I have “CDO” and ADHD and a full host of other sociopathic traits… Not to mention a negative attention span and fully depleted level of patience for most people.
