Wow, my steer has stumped my vets

He just posted on FB yesterday. He couldn’t recover from the infection and passed away.

Correct, despite our efforts and the efforts of our vets we just couldn't get in front of his infections. He had a golf ball sized abscess on his jaw. It was preventing him from eating. He stayed stationary for two days. When I brought him some sweet feed, he couldn't eat. Also when he tried to walk, he was unstable on his feet and nearly fell. My wife said enough. One of her fears was when the temps drop below freezing he so skinny he'd die a miserable death if he froze. Not that he would have made it that long. She said do you want our friend to come over and take care of him. I said no, he's our responsibility. I went out an hour later and humanly put him down. It was tough for sure.

Sorry to hear this. I know you thought of him as a pet and not just stock.

That is the toughest thing in the world to do and I’m so sorry you had to do it yourself and I admire you for it. Don’t know that I could have have.

Thanks everyone!! Our three longhorns came to the ranch ten years ago in Aug. Nope they weren't livestock, more like lawn ornaments and bif mooching pets. However, two of the three were very friendly and loved to be loved on. The other one was the lead steer, he kept his distance always. Tough for sure saying goodbye and having to put him down. At least he's not suffering.

Did the vet think the infection in his jaw was related to his horn droping? Sorry he and you had to go thru this but you did the right thing.

It was hard to say, she thinks the infection spread from his sinuses. It was hard to say. Just glad he's not suffering any longer.
