I could certainly see you starting with a hard division of casting for the handguns and saving the deeper dive into weird rifle science later. The straightwall cases really are pretty forgiving, and given the amount of stuff that you kill, you could do A LOT of good science with meplat size, shallow and deep hollow point cavity pins, etc...

There’s ZERO chance, ZERO CHANCE, of him ever casting.
It’s not above your pay grade. It’s above your GAS level.Zee wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 3:30 pmIt’s above my pay grade of brain capacity.CPJ 2.0 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 3:10 pmBigslug wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 2:48 am

Thanks! SIL did some powder coating when he had the outfit up and running, he said it was super easy and the results were really good. I definitely want to play with this but I’m also a little afraid that when we do the old standards like 500gr .458s the purists might be resistant to the new processes. Part of the inventory includes two ovens that he used for powder coating.breamfisher wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:11 pm Just a thought, but for rifle bullets you can avoid all the lube/contamination/seating issues by going to powder coating. You can gas check them if so desired. There's outfits doing it commercially if you want to check them out....

Yeah, there is thatbreamfisher wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:12 pm As far as casting goes, I've found "I'm messing with something dangerous, I need peace and quiet, leave me alone so you don't get burned" is a great deterrent to familial members to get some time alone.
Powder coat them silver. That way it’s not “some quar-ass pinko commie color!”Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:14 pmThanks! I use a clear powder coat. You have to look twice to notice it. I'm using it to coat 535 gn postal shot thru a Sharps. I don't see any difference in accuracy over tradition lube.Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:14 pmThanks! I don’t think I’d ever be really interested in firing up a lead pot to make a few hundred bullets for personal use, but the concept of firing up a commercial machine and feed it ingots on top, flip some switches and then some dials and watch a thousands of bullets come out of the bottom ready to size, coat, package and sell is a different story. That’s basically printing cash in my brain
Think of it as making ice cubes, only you're filling the trays with water that's about 750-800F.
