I would probably be interested in some of the new cartridges like the:
.22 CM
6 CM
6.5 PRC
7 PRC
If I wasn’t already so vested in their predecessors. As it is, it’s not worth transitioning rifles and loading components for something I already have covered redundantly.

He started charging me, so I had to drop him at around 1450 yards with a 7mm Dakota, with a 200 grain Wildcat bullet

Already have one. And a .220 Swift. So, the lack of need to spoil up for a .22 CM.

Won’t accomplish anything I can’t do already and the expense is counter productive to my goals.

Let's see. I paid about $600.00, new, years ago, for my 22-250 Remington Model 700, 26" bull barrel with a laminate wood stock. It shoots sub MOA groups at a 3625 fps muzzle velocity with 55 grain Sierra Blitzking bullets using factory Federal V-Shok ammo. Why would I want anything else for varmints? I agree that the 30-06 is the best all around cartridge, but for me, the Winchester Model 70 300 win mag was my choice to do the heavy lifting. With that said, if I could only pick 3 they would be a 22LR bolt, 30-30 lever and a 12 gauge pump...

This was my longest kill using a bi-pod.
See the dirt face behind me?
We were shooting on top of that.
There was hardly any grass, so that made it easy to mark it, plus there is a two-track to the left of me.
The fence to the right also serves as locator. It is a long strip between the two-track and the fence.

Not sure me neighbors or city police would appreciate me using a .458 to correct my woodchuck problem.

I did watch a PH take out a dingo with a .458 WM while it was chasing a wallaby. Rather impressive, but I suspect he was well practiced at doing that.

Speaking of .22-250, I recently learned that Tikka occasionally does a run of .22-250's with a 1:8" twist. If I were already set up for the round, I would be sorely tempted by that to lob some of the heavier pills.

If I didn’t have an 8T already, that’s where I’d be looking.

If it was a heavy barreled version I would have been way more tempted. It was the lite/stainless configuration. Still probably a great gun for SE sized deer.

This question always devolves into the general concensus that it takes 3. I'll buck that trend and say the .243 win. It'll take pdogs with aplomb, though hi-count colony critters will bite you with barrel wear. It'll certainly put down elk with proper bullet selection and judicious shooting. That's a pretty wide bandwidth. The question was one.
