Coyote hunt that turned into a javelina hunt. With Zee…
Zee was in town. We’ve hunted together here before a few times. Javelina, oryx, coyotes…. rabbits when times where tough.
This particular hunt was for coyotes. But I also had a javelina tag in my back pocket. We set up for our first stand and started calling. Nothing. Moved to our second stand. Same result. Just as we were getting ready to wind down for the evening, a bunch of javelina came running in. I lined up on one, but it wouldn’t stay still long enough. Just to my right, there was one standing perfectly still. I wasted no time lining up on it and taking the shot. There was no doubt it was hit, based on the impact sound. It was quartering hard toward me. With 55gr HP .223 ammo in the gun, the results were explosive… The javelina ran about 15-20 yards and piled up behind a bush. It kicked a few times, and it was over.
It was a mess inside. Shoulder destroyed, gut material in the front half. We gutted and cleaned it out the best we could and got it out of there. Surprisingly, it didn’t stink nearly as bad as I expected. The gut material inside, yes… it stunk.. but we cleaned and iced it quickly. The meat didn’t stink at all. One ruined shoulder, but otherwise good to go. I’ll be smoking the meat in the near future. We’ll see how it turns out.

I also took the skull to a local guy I’m familiar with for a euro mount. He did a pretty good job. I’ll mount it and hang it in the shop. Souvenir from good times.

Good times!!
Stand by for SERIOUS 6mm ARC testing in the coming weeks. At least 3 guns and a NEW ammunition will be up and running for Pig Fest. Lots of data to be gathered. Ground floor.

Next time I plan to do the same. How long did it take to receive your meat?

That’s a long time.
I don’t know if it was your quantity or the end of the season influx of ranches finishing off their permits.
I’m going to have a meeting with the new owners. There are a few issues that came up this season I’d like clarification on.

Looks the same as last years stuff, I will taste some this weekend. It seems a bit confusing at the front desk when I call, everybody is nice to a fault on the phone, but it is hard to get a question answered quickly.
