So. Development continues. Since I suck at CAD modeling, I do things in multiple steps. Rather than do one drawing producing a completed result, I instead make several 3rd grade level blobs, then stitch them together, improve one till it works, or start fresh to unclutter the design tree in Fusion. (The design software)

Such as this “masterpiece”.

Shown is the barrel clamp, which will be ahead of the action, the base, the trigger and grip. (Block and rod) Trigger and grip are simply there for a visual representation of the space I’m dealing with.
Breaking it down though, that’s a large chunk of the chassis “design” done. It’s a flat bar with a block mounted to it.

Here we enter the DFM process, (design for manufacturer) choosing not what will be made, but how. This could go two ways. In a store bought chassis, they start with a billet of aluminum (billet aluminum isn’t a grade of aluminum, much to the chagrin of internet folks, it refers to a solid block…I digress) and machine away everything that doesn’t look like a chassis. That’s a lot of waste, and would require a $pendy chunk of material. I’ll be making the base, the sides, the barrel block, the trigger guard, and the arse end block which will integrate the grip attachment point, as well as the stock all separate. Then bolt it all together. Had the idea for years, finally have something where I know it will work.

You've probably told me, but which program is that? I use tinkercad and have gotten really good with it, but it could use some better features than it has.

Getting real hard not to order one and go after the stock with spraypaint

So tell me why we’re free floating the receiver? That’s a new one on me.

Autodesk Fusion. Free to hobbyists. Just say you’re a hobbyist.

The hobby license is limited function, but not limiting for hobby/homeshop/frugal users. Mainly on the file storage, and especially on the CAM side, but if you aren’t using my a CNC machine, that doesn’t matter. If you are, there’s ways around things. Even without getting around things it’s not horribly limiting in your abilities, more in time saving and convenience. For instance I can make an operation to mill a block round, and drill 3 different sized holes. Paid version lets me do just that in one operation. It does the thing, then pauses. Change tool. Repeat. Free version that would be four totally separate programs. Which is starting and dropping each one, and changing the tools. There’s ways around it, just takes some work.

I’ve seen some bench guns set up that way, and that’s how I’ve seen a lot of the guns I can’t think of the name that are basically an action and barrel clamped in a vise. I’ll have to find a pic.


But the main reason is, I need something to do, and want something different. Will it be better than regular? I dunno. We’s fixing to see.

Rail guns?

At least I think that's what they're called. Either way, those things will shoot ridiculous groups that put benchrest guys to shame. I guess I'd expect that for removing the human element though.

I've gotten to "shoot" one, once.

They are the penultimate 1 trick pony. Weighing in at up to 50 lbs, they're great for shooting TINY groups (0.039" 5 shot group, 0.1262" 5 group agg)* , but pretty much worthless for anything else.

I've seen it done to 10/22s with bull barrels also, because the steel barrel is a LOT stiffer than an aluminum receiver, so bed the heavy ass barrel and let the action "float"

Pfffft. It’s the perfect walk around hunting gun.





Like you’d have to walk around the truck your hauling it in to get in posistion to shoot.

But, you could make eyeball shots, very accurately. Or choose which nostril you wanted to send a bullet in. Or, make the perfect Texas heart shot.

Went tire-kicking at one of the gun shops at the edge of my operating range on Friday. They had one of those Rascal/Crickets done up as a 91/30 Mosin.

I'm thinkin' if you're of a mind to build these things up, you need to get one of those and lengthen and turn down the bolt handle, then find a red dot that looks the part of a scaled down PU scope. Really Small Enemy at the Gates. . .
