Date night with my French Model in NM!
We cruised the desert yesterday afternoon and evening just enjoying the scenery and stories.
Right at sunset we set up for calling and I scanned with my thermal. Jay was running his 20 Practical with no night vision. I saw a yote running in at the 12 o'clock direction. Jay got on it with his rifle. It was running a diagonal left to right straight to the call, then kept going. I turned the volume down on the call and tried to stop it with a squeak.
Tracking it going between brush, it was about to make its way to the rocks and out of there..Jay picked a clearing between brush, waited for it, led it and squeezed.. good placement, just behind the shoulders. A bit high. Spined it. It dropped on the spot, but it stayed sitting up for a few before laying down. Young yote. Dumb enough to run in but smart enough not to stop. Couldn't outrun his 20P and 35gr HPs this time..

I had to accommodate and provide remaining daylight for his idiosyncratic lack.

There was standing water everywhere, the yard was squishy, and I forgot my boots and only had the waterproof Oboz shoes I was wearing, good range report on them, they worked well for what I got done.

I once saw a groundhog shot with a 30/30 Accelerator. It was dragging all of it's guts, but it made it 20 yards to it's hole. Also saw a GH shot through the head with a .243. The entire skull was mush. It made it 20 yards to it's hole (didn't go in though). Another shot through the neck with a 12ga slug. Made it to it's hole.
So why can't the last five GH's I liver shot with a .22 short make it two steps? I want them to die in the hole so I don't have to smell them or get rid of them.

They would make it back to the hole if shot with a .270...... just wouldn't stay there. Have a good laugh and keep digging

Can't really tell by pic but it was a small one. I left it there over night and something carried it off. Hopefully far enough where it doesn't stink up the place.
