Did one, decided against doing two at once because I’ve never worked with this steel. Hate to screw up two blades.
This one seemed to go just fine.

Been a while since I heat treated anything. Used to have an ammo can full of motor oil I used…
Nice process. I am interested in how these turn out

That’s pretty trick. You’re right handy to have around.

I guess these will be powdercoated flat black since I just ordered the stuff to powder coat them flat black....

Out of the easy bake oven and bead blasted. Looks like I missed some spots or got greasy finger prints on them. One side is certainly better than the other, but that’s the machining process and I’ll try and fix that tomorrow. Bent the tip (just) put it in the forge. Didnt notice it when it was glowing red. A little grinding and it’ll be good enough for my use.

Nice! You're not the only one dickin around today. First try at paper cartridges for the 1858 with this mandrel I made. I just need to make the female portion of it.
Re: The last person to post in this thread don’t get nothing.
What kind of paper is that?

Supposedly I can nitrate them for a better burn but I'm not really concerned with that. They look thick from the picture but it's definitely not. It was floppy as hell trying to dump powder into it. And the bottom is a single sheet where the flame will hit it.

I went to an auction today and I learned a couple of things. I can't afford newer stuff and now I get outbid by the guys buying stuff to take to Mexico. Second when you are bidding on a combine because it is too cheap and the other guy quits you get to call your wife and try to explain what a good deal you just made.
Re: The last person to post in this thread don’t get nothing.
Yeah, tell that to the clerk when you buy them. Just like I’ve said “these are for touching off parts in my milling machine”

Real BP is extremely over rated. Subs are the way.

I was using pyrodex and it's supposed to be less fouling and less corrosive but that's a load of shìt. The gun went overnight without being cleaned and the barrel already started with some light rusting. If I had known these things were that finicky I would have bought the stainless model. Either way, the triple 7 has great reviews and everyone reports higher velocities with the same charge of BP or substitutes.
Re: The last person to post in this thread don’t get nothing.
Pyrodex IS less nasty.
But it’s still nasty. And leaving it overnight results in what you’ve seen.

Ok I need a full explanation on how. I have 3 guns I’d like to make paper cartridges forJustsomedude wrote: ↑Sun Feb 25, 2024 1:35 amSurprisingly they sell them by the bunch on Amazon. I'm getting a bit better. This time I cut them in half so they are super thin.

This guy gives a good rundown on it. Only difference is that I made my own mandrel to wrap them around to glue together.Wambli Ska wrote: ↑Sun Feb 25, 2024 4:27 amOk I need a full explanation on how. No problem. I find it pretty enjoyable to sit down and make them. You can also look up on YouTube how to nitrate the paper for better performance.

I'm sure that it won't make as much of a difference on deer since the edge is the only part of the blade that's in contact with the meat most of the time but I discovered that very smooth or polished blades cut fish much better than textured blades. A friend gave me a couple of "Bubba Blades" which are kind of a high end fish cutting knives and I was all excited about them. The blades had a flat black texture and looked cool but I used them once. The rough texture didn't glide along the skin or meat very well when cutting fillets as on fish, the sides of the blade spend more time in contact with the meat. My other knives with polished blades worked tons better.
Re: The last person to post in this thread don’t get nothing.
I have a Cold Steel filet knife that’s coated. I HATE IT. Maybe not so much that it’s coated, but it’s WAY too stiff to be a filet knife. But you may be right about the coating being sticky. But as you said, this isn’t really for meat.fisheadgib wrote: ↑Sun Feb 25, 2024 3:17 pmI'm sure that it won't make as much of a difference on deer since the edge is the only part of the blade that's in contact with the meat most of the time but I discovered that very smooth or polished blades cut fish much better than textured blades. I’m sorta curious if the tool path on the blade (bare, no coating) would reduce friction. It’s not flat, but has tiny “ridges” running along the length. I’ve seen chef knives with gouges (lack of better term) ground in them to keep stuff from sticking to the blade.
But, it’s a skinning knife. I do like the Sharpfinger for that purpose, so this should be awesome in that regard.
Some knives it’s just hard to beat the design. Like Victrinox boning knives. Theres a reason that’s what everyone uses what for boning meat.
