It's definitely not one of the 8's
I tapped a 314 lead slug into it and out and it swaged down to 311-12

Guessing Wambli is on the right track with 7.65 Belgian/Argentine.
.303 British has a .532" case head and the mag geometry for the rim is gonna be pretty different than a standard 98 box.
7.7x58 Japanese is essentially a .303 Brit with a rimless case. Granted, it's pretty unlikely, but with a .303" (ish) bore and .311" groove, it's within the realm of possibility.

I'm still on the 7.62 ship. Especially if it's a 98 action. I know, I know I'm being hard headed but a lot of 7.65 rifles were 95 rifles. Lots of them were made into 30-06s by rechambering them. Time will tell all. Lots of Japanese rifles, same story. Loose, but that was in the 50s.

Another uncalled=for entry would be a 7x57 J, which is smaller than a JS.

Maybe you ended up with a wildcat.

With everything wanting to stop right at the case shoulder.
I'm 99% certain there is a piece of case neck stuck in the chamber.
It made sense and it's what I think I see.

Remove the action from the wood and clamp. Run a short bronze slightly oversize pistol bore bristle brush through the chamber until it JUST goes into the neck. Apply heat to the chamber area and pull on the rod, if it does not come out easily tap from the muzzle end with a cleaning rod or dowel. I've done this a few times.

The chamber cast has a good chance of pulling it out if there’s something in there.

And it will solve the mystery of what it's chambered for.

Hoping it does.
My son is seeing the same thing.
By my guesstimate it's just a small piece 1/4" or so.
Should have the "stuff" tomorrow

Status on the Mauser? Did the chamber cast remove the bit and what is the caliber?

Your going to have to stay mad a bit longer
I Had a friend come down who's done more of this type stuff than me.
We did cast it and it's shorter than an argentine.
He thinks it's a pretty odd one.
7.65 x 45
He thinks he has an ammo can full of it so probably fire form a case if he does

I can't find a 6.5x45 in COTW. There's a 6.5 x 52, which is a 25-35 Winchester, but it's rimmed.
