Ok, back in the blind after another comedy of errors and have time to write up the morning hunt.

So, after getting into town at 12:30AM, me and the kiddo got up at 4:AM to come out to the blind. After seeing the amount of turkeys on camera, I brought the H&R 10gauge along with the deer rifle- PSA KS-47 in 7.62x39. Kiddo brought his Savage Axis II in 6.5CM, and his camera.

We saw a couple of jackrabbits at first light, then a group of tiny deer came in. A mid -sized doe with a button buck yearling, a yearling doe, and a tiny spike. We decided to just let them all go.

About 5 minutes after that we hear a shot from my buddy’s blind and his daughter took a forkhorn

We continued watching, and eventually a weird looking spike came in, and my kiddo carefully lined up… his camera.

He then started recording video, transitioned to the rifle and snapped off a perfect behind the shoulder shot that dropped the spike where it stood. So yes- I have video and will post some still frames from it when I get a chance.

Now, we started picking up and packing up the blind. I figured we were done. About 3 minutes later, the kiddo starts tapping my leg and pointing down range. I looked up and saw another spike on our “hit list” had some in and was circling around the downed deer, obviously freaked out… but not enough to run. So, I pulled the 10GA off the shelf and brought up the rifle. The deer would not stand still long enough for a shot, , and when he did, the shot had the bullet passing height this deer and into the one that the kiddo had shot minutes before. So, I took my time, and finally was able to send a round through his brain and dropping him in his tracks.

By this point, it was starting to heat up. So we tagged the deer, loaded them on the truck and hauled ass to get them cut up.
Only pic I have on my phone:

Now we are back in the blind, it’s like 90 degrees, and we are only going after turkey now

My buddy’s youngest daughter got her first deer this morning. My kiddo and I saw a shootable spike but let it walk to save it for later

The only difference between the two is nothing.

I bought some Xmas themed leggings (only color they had) at the dollah sto last year cause I couldn’t find my thermals. Sooooooo comfy.

So. Hunted Saturday morning. Saw a few does at a few hundred yards out. Scope was fogged, and wasn’t really into shooting a deer on an almost 80° day. Had a spike walk behind me, within Glock range. Had he given me a shot he’d have been jerky. I had it in my mind that with the temps it was gonna be a looooong shot, or a 43X shot.

Hunted till 10. Farted around camp, had a little nappy poo about 12:30. Set the alarm for 3:00pm. Cousin texts me about 4, saying they are getting in their stand. Hmmm. Maybe I should wake up.
Sat down about 4:15. 5-ish I see a buck waaaay out yonder. Then he disappears below the terrace in the field. Then he pops back up with a doe. Can’t get a range on either. Then I did. 704 yards.

Dialed in my 19.4 (iirc) minutes up bullet uppage, sent it. Deer drops, dead before he hit the ground due to a 168 Amax to the base of its head.

Get to the deer, and the math don’t math. Marked the spot on my app, it says 589 yards to my shooting spot. NOT 704. And I hit high right of the POA. Gutted it, hosed it out, ate a sammich with the cousins. Headed out, but was curious. Turned around, went back to crime scene to double check the map. With bad signal sometimes it’s off. Not THAT off, but still. It agreed with the previous results, as did google maps.

Pondered all night and the next day. Was going to go back and recreate the scenario next time I was there. Untill I used ONx to check distance.

Well, the deer wasn’t at 704, but the tree line was. That dope FIFTY SIX INCHES high at 589 yards. Let’s assume the difference of POA and POI is 30”. That still makes it 26” high at 589. The windage Im not concerned about. It was right, but *probably* would have been in the zone. But I somehow managed to hit him with the scope being 26” off. I must have flinched perfectly.

It was a slob ass shot, and I won’t be doing it again without making sure I’ve got the correct yardage, and some confirmation at distance with the rifle.
