Damn 22's....a Marlin 81 DL this time

I'm a sucker for any cheap 22
The pusher said 75 bucks and I said yes.
I liked the obnoxiously big bolt and having a receiver sight. Eliminated any chance I had of passing.

Looks like a range trip tomorrow

Nice score! I have it's twin minus the receiver sight. Pretty darn accurate old rifle.

$200 MINIMUM here.

I saw a marlin model 60 for $400 the other day. 🙄

It's definitely pretty old school....
I hope it's on because the sight I haven't figured out.

Most places here too
This guy is quick in and out
If I see something in his just taken in spot I like I'll ask about it and he generally throws out a low price.
That was the case with this one.

I guess the receiver sight and swivels are what makes it a DL
I'll let you know how it shoots....bore looks great

Thanks
I may have a plan for this one
Every boy needs a 22 at least I think so.

It's got to be accurate first though.

Ya! That would have gone home with me! It's a Marlin .22 with a cool peep sight! Love at first sight, and it probably shoots great, too!

I just took it out for it's debut.
Everything worked perfectly
You just never know with a used gun if it will hang up feeding, ejecting, or if it will even fire.

The biggest surprise was the trigger.
Just a nice clean break.

This was the sight in 3 shots each.
Just at 30 yards it started low left and I worked it up and right.
I did tweak it left a hair afterwards but yeah I'm happy with another Marlin.

Pretty sure this is pre micro- groove

That ought to do nicely. Now back it up to 100 yards :D

Pic of mine just for giggles! The 100 yard steel is pretty easy even with the standard sights and my old eyes.

I was curious on yours especially the forend and bolt.
This must be an early one with this style bolt and foreend that tapers larger from the receiver.
How is the trigger on yours ?

The rear sight is worth more than what you paid for the gun. Looks like the receiver is not grooved for scope mounts so I can almost guarantee it's pre micro-groove. VERY nice score!

Trigger is pretty decent, breaks pretty clean. Don't have a pull gauge so can't tell you the pull weight. The knob on yours looks bigger, mine measures just under 3/4"

That extra outward bend too is different

I bought an 81 back in March. No receiver sight. Stock is held together with deck screws and nails.

Now that school is out I’m gonna try to fix it with wood glue and wood filler. Figured this is a good stick to practice on for refinishing

It’s the one on the left. $250 OTD for both of these

I have refurbished a number of old 22s over the years. The one on the left would look great in flat black. Patch putty and paint. Though it's the expensive way to go, Duracoat would make that old gun shine. I have a 22 mag upstairs that I posted a while back, it came from the scrap bin but it looks and shoots great now.

That front sight looks a bit wonky..

Pretty neat stock on that Gill gun.
Checkered and monte carlo

I haven’t looked at the front sight. All I’ve done with them since I got them has been a function test.

The HS is in good shape other than the missing/broken rear sight. I have a new replacement but haven’t gotten around to installing it yet

This stock has got at least one looong crack in it. It may not be fixable. But, I figure it’ll be a good one to practice on.

If it was a CF I wouldn’t attempt it

Pry the crack open carefully and inject wood glue. I used a razor knife and small screw drivers to pry the crack open. If to have wood clamps, clamp it for 24 hours if not surgical tube from the hardware store till work. Repair one crack at a time. The glued area will be stronger than any other part of the wood. I have thinned the glue with water and injected it into the crack with a syringe. Tooth picks or small slivers of plastic can be used to spread glue deep into the cracks.
