I stumbled across a Marlin 1889.
It still has case colors 75% or thereabouts
Bore is perfect.
Chambered in 44 W.
What's a "good " price ?

You're looking at it. How much would you be willing to pay for it? The time to buy it is when you see it. Every second you wait gives someone else a second to make up their mind. Bottom line, it's worth what you're willing to pay.

I did throw an offer out in my comfort level but this may be more of a collector grade so a more informed/ knowledgable base on these would help.

Anywhere from 1200-3500 depending on condition and features. I know that doesn’t help but they don’t realize Winchester money but close. A solid 89 in 44wcf with a good bore? Probably 1500 ish for a good price. Rifle or carbine?

This one's a rifle with Beech front sight.
Has one of those maybe skinner ? Rear sights plus the regular one.
Probably a good deal at the 1,000 it's priced at but coming up with that isn't easy.

Don't really have the need just the wow it would be a fun ride.

At $1,000 I would get it if the funds are in the fun account and the hire is good. As Al said they don’t bring Winchester money, but they don’t last long on the rack either. Marlin fans know what they know.

First of all, let me establish my credentials with regard to the value of this rifle. They are exactly zilch. The first I had ever heard of a Marlin 1889, was the 1st sentence of your post.
In looking at the link I sent you, two things stood out regarding the value. First is the caliber. The most mentions were 38 caliber. 44 would seem to me to be a premium. Second is the color case-hardening. Not much mention about that in the link.
I think this might be a special rifle. I'm with Wambli on this. If you could do it, you should.

From the 42nd edition Blue Book from maybe 3-4 years ago:

Offerings were .25-20 (RARE!) .32-20, 38-.40, .44-40.

Approximately 55,000 made from 1889 to 1899 with a serial number range of 25,000 to 100,000. @39,300 were made with 24" barrels; @2,260 with 28" Octagonal most common. Case hardening on hammer, lever, & buttplate.

They don't list a 100% condition - 95% lists $1950; $1050 for 80%
Add 25% for the 15 and 20 inch barrel carbines
Add 300-500% for the "Musket" with 30" barrel
Add 15% for .44-40.

Special order features (which Marlin was certainly doing at that time) will bump it according to what they are.

If you can land it for a grand, you're doing really well.

Congratulations!!! You’re gonna love that rifle

The tang sight might or might not be OEM. . .

JM Marlin did some pretty stunning things with the Ballard single shot rifles around that period, so I expect they'd easily throw on a peep or cut a special barrel length for those who would ask. I don't know if the Cody museum has as detailed records of Marlin production as they do for Winchester, but it might be worth asking them.

Sorry been on the road! That's a very nice 1889, and the tang sight is a nice plus! If the bore is good that would be a rare find! Hope you can negotiate a price for it! Probably $1000+ would be the correct price range. Values have really gone up! This was the first model to have side eject! I have one in .32-20. BTW, I still don't have anything in .44-40.

After a closer look at the picture, it looks more like an 1894. I don't see the little lever lock tab at the back of the lever. STILL a great rifle!!

What I've found out thus far is It is indeed going to be a 94.
Most likely a very early one.
It would still be a special order gun with it having a 26" barrel.
If that rear sight is factory it's a 3-4 hundred dollar item.
So all in all still a good buy but still haven't found out about my offer.
Maybe Tuesday at the earliest.

The model# is on the tang under the sight.
