Blades!!! What have you got handy…

Probably my last local buy. I really like the last Neylor Forge knife I bought so for our anniversary my wife decided to get me a companion. A rather usable 3” of chunky steel the model is called the Honey Badger. Maple scales and a really nice leather sheath.
Top knife is the 4.5” blade Woodsman that I bought not too long ago. The Honey Badger is right under it.

Benchmade Triage for me. I rotate between that and a Griptillian with no real rhyme or reason. I am curious about getting one of these nicer fixed blades though. My dad gave me quite a nice one when I finished flight school, but I'm hesitant to carry it afield and lose it.

I’m not shy about taking expensive blades out to use in the field. But it’s nice that y he price point of these local boys is still in the hard working handmade knives range. This guy is $225, not out of range for most. It’s one of the reasons I love these guys.

couple from a custom maker down in Carlsbad NM by the name of T.R. Lewis. They have been thus far relegated to the too nice to use pile but I am strongly considering using the large one during hunting season this year.

Most days in the "field" I am challenged with opening a few boxes, getting into those pesky plastic containers it seems like everything is packaged in these days, and an occasional task that actually warrants a knife.

I’m pragmatic when it comes to blades. I’ve been gifted and issued some stellar pieces of craftsmanship. Be it fear of losing or damaging such fine work in the case of gifts or realizing that they just aren’t practical in the case of monstrous issues blades………my daily life revolves around blade use. Darn near non stop.
With that, I have become very narrow minded, cynical, and practical in my selection of carry knives.
1. Fast, one handed deployment.
2. A 3-4” blade with a deep belly and pointed tip are most practical.
3. Easily sharpened. I don’t care about hard steel that holds an edge forever. I want them stupid sharp and I want to get there quick. Don’t have time to spend on sharpening and I know how to use a sharpener. It’s about time management. I have sharpeners strategically staged through out my daily life.
4. Easily closed with one hand.
5. Reversible clip.
6. Fixed blades are bulky to carry. But, for static jobs like butchering……that’s another story.
7. It has to earn its keep. Looks are superfluous.
8. No emotional attachment for daily carry. I will break or lose it in the brush.
A few of my parameters. I go through daily knives like underwear. Searching for the perfect one. Wear them out or lose them like women.
Fancy blades can be summed up by a movie quote - “It’ not fer eat’n. It’s just ferrrrr look’n through.”

I tend to carry a few Chinese Kershaws. They fit Zee's criteria for work knifes. Why do I run Chinese Kershaws? They have pretty good quality and I can get them for around $20. Which means if I drop them off a boat something else happens where I lose them, I get upset but not angry.
Right now I've got a Kershaw Clash and a Kershaw RJ Tactical 3.0. I carry one on each side not because I'm a tactical guru, but because if you're hanging off the back of a boat cutting line, rope, or vegetation off a motor, you never know what side you'll have to approach the problem from, and if I have one knife, it's always on the wrong side.

That is another thing I’m on about. At least Two knives always. Or whenever practical. One on each side. Each has a purpose.

Mine have a different purpose. And I've found that for my purposes, no serrations is better than serrated. Even if I'm cutting rope, a partially serrated blade stinks.
If it's a crab trap, well, time to break out the wire cutters.

Here’s one I made about three years ago. O1 tool steel. Finish isn’t the best (aside from the rust) but it was a test piece for multiple finishing methods. And it was carried daily and sweated on for two years till I snagged it on a door and lost it temporarily. Luckily I called the customer and they found it.
Anyway, it was made as a GTFOM knife. Wasn’t the best design for that, and I have other ideas that I’ll get to one day.

I used to attach a loop/lanyard to knives. Lost a few and abandoned that concept. Just something else to catch on things and get yanked out.

Then there are these two. Razor knife from Turnback Knife, and a SAK.
Want to say the SAK is the camper model, I love it because it has a saw blade. Not a stupid ass cork screw like are on some. Seriously, WTF are you gonna do with a cork screw in the real world?
I have the razor knife so that I can scrape and abuse a blade and not feel bad about it. The SAK is a $30 knife, not too spendy to abuse. But why be a ham fisted fudge stick and ruin a sharp edge?
I too, am pragmatic on blades. Once you pass the $100-ish mark on folders, you’re getting incremental performance improvements. Once you pass $200, you’re paying for looks and perceived value. Past that, it’s window dressing and collector value. Which may be your thing. It’s not mine.
“BUT BUT BUT muh knaf was made with 69420 supercocksuckerstainless steel! I can cut my way out of the side of a kidnappers van, stab the kidnappers, and STILL cut my T-Bone steak AND shave in the morning!”
Sure ya can, Tactical Tommy, sure ya can.

I found this Kerahaw 3 knife set on clearance at Walmart a few years ago for $9.00. It also came with 2 keychain attachment tools which I don’t use.
I carry the top 1 when I’m in the classroom. It’s small enough that it shouldn’t scare anyone(I’m probably not supposed to carry one as a teacher but I feel nekkid w/o one.)The middle is my weekend carry.

I am very much in Zee’s boat with carry/ working knives. As for the easy deploy/ stow blade, I have become a real fan of OTF automatic knives. The blade is NOT going to accidentally open, and the retract is incredibly safe and makes it into an inert lump. I had that epiphany while on top of a rickety ladder opening feed sacks to dump in a feeder. It is now one of my favorite utility knives.
I’m away from home right now so all I gots with me is the cheap OTF, a Kershaw ez-out, and the SOG Tangle fixed blade.
