Not trying to victim blame here but... would you let someone you didn't know ride in your vehicle if you didn't feel like things were right? Gun or not, I wouldn't.

Same. Also, if your gun jams... don't give it to the guy that's trying to rob you.

Heard about this on the news yesterday (close enough that both mine and Cullman county are in the Birmingham "market" for TV.)

I've sold stuff on market place a few times. Am always armed, and most times have armed "back-up" in sight and range, in a second vehicle. (Meet in a Walmart parking lot)
Most of the times, I've been the seller, but the once or twice I was the buyer. AIN'T NO WAY IN HELL I'm going anywhere with "you" to "pick-up" what you were supposed to be delivering.

"Hey, call me when you get close to back with it and I'll meet you here again" would be my response, and away I go, back to the house

Agree with all of that. The fact the guy was illegally here is ancillary to everything else.
Don't ride with people you meet on Marketplace or Craigslist.
Don't surrender your gun.
Don't put yourself in a position to be robbed.

You do you, but $20 is $20.
I’ve met up with lots of dudes I’ve only met on them internets. Mostly nothing bad has come of it.

I've done quite a few transactions over the years and I have had ONE bad experience with a dude who failed to show up twice to the meeting place and then asked for a third time...

Other than that I have met some very nice people both while buying and selling. But the chances of me getting in the car with any of them are non-existent. Now, I ahem gone into folks home to pick up pieces of furniture and such. But a thorough observation of the whole neighborhood you drive into should give you every indication of whether this is a good idea or not.

Ah yes and ALWAYS armed.
